Course Overview

Multimedia combines the creativity of art and design with the skills and knowledge of computer technologies and programming to create interactive digital media products such as online and mobile applications, screen based or environmentally interactive designs.

The course is designed to foster a range of interests and abilities including art, design, music, technology and computing. As they progress through the programme students are encouraged to develop particular specialisations based on their individual interests and talents. Areas of specialist study include e-Learning, games development, interaction design, interactive programming, 3D/ animation, video production and audio technology.

Course content

The course places particular emphasis on individual and team based projects. Students learn how to integrate the various skills and competencies required to produce an effective multimedia products. A unique aspect of this course is its joint accreditation with the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, Germany.

Work placement/Internship

At present, there is no formal work placement in the Department. Industry briefs and tuition play a very important role in the multimedia programme. The Department links up with Media Industry’s both nationally and internationally and provides industry solutions for their needs, giving the students real life experience from live industry projects.

Career prospects; Further studies

Employment prospects are wide and varied. All graduates will be comfortable working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, managing projects and possibly starting their own business. Areas of specialist employment include e-Learning, games development, interaction design, 3D design and animation, interactive programming and audio technology.

Entry requirements

At least two Leaving Certificate subjects at Grade C3 minimum (Higher Level), together with a further four subjects at Grade D3 minimum (Ordinary or Higher Level). The six subjects must include Mathematics and either English or Irish. Helpful subjects are Art, Music, and English.
