Course Overview

This three year programme prepares students for a broad range of exciting careers in the computing sector. It provides students with an opportunity to work with evolving technologies in a fast moving industry. Students will develop essential skills in computing which will open many career paths and options for further study. During the programme, students will learn how to design and build desktop and mobile apps, troubleshoot and fix computer hardware, use computers to work with and manage data, connect devices and make them work together.

Technology is used in all aspects of industry, retail and financial sectors. Whether you want to work in a large multinational company, a small indigenous Irish company or an innovative start-up, computing graduates are much sought after. The technology sector in Ireland is a vibrant one providing many opportunities for graduates. Companies such as Twitter, Facebook, eBay, PayPal and Google have chosen to locate in Ireland here providing jobs across a wide variety of computing areas.

This programme is ideal for the problem solver, the team player and those who enjoy building things in a fun and innovative environment. Students will undertake work placement and engage in projects inspired by real challenges faced by companies and develop solutions. The classroom will be led by industry-experienced, highly skilled lecturers who use a hands-on approach in a supportive friendly environment.

Year 1
Introduction to Programming, Web Development Fundamentals, Computer System Concepts, Mathematics for Computing, Operating System Fundamentals, Organisations and Business Processes, Introduction to Computer Networks, Introduction to OO Programming, Programme Design Concepts, Electronics for Computing, Mathematical Methods, Operating Systems Management, Interpersonal Development.
Year 2
Structured Programming, Introduction to OO Design, Multimedia Technology, Database Planning and Design, Human Computer Interface Design, Management Principles, Data Structures, Microprocessor Systems, Statistical Data Analysis, Internet working, Database Systems Implementations, Enterprise Application Development.
Year 3
Mobile Application Development, Algorithms, Network Services and Applications, Project and Teamwork, Computer Graphics, Professional Development, Software Security and Testing, Embedded Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Project and Teamwork, Organisational Studies, Work Placement.

 

Career prospects; Further studies

Graduates of the Level 7 Bachelor of Science Degree in Computing will be qualified to design, develop and test software applications.

You can pursue further third level education including level 8 courses in computing and technology.

The Thurles Campus Enterprise Acceleration Centre houses technology start-ups who require computing graduates and there is an opportunity for graduates who have innovative ideas to form their own start-ups.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 Passes in Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English/Irish

Full FETAC Level 5 or FETAC Level 6 Award.
