This qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required for success in careers in computing and systems development. The course has been tailored to maximise student’s opportunities and covers highly sought after skills including programming. Whether you are viewing this course as a direct route into employment or a stepping stone onto university, this course will equip you with the skills you need. It provides a progression path to Computing Science, ICT, Interactive Media and other computing related degree courses at university.
The HNC in Computing and Systems Development (with Games and Mobile App Development) has been developed to focus on:
- equipping students with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to succeed in employment in the computing industry
- teaching programming skills using new innovative technologies, including C#, games programming and mobile app development
- throughout the course, students will also learn a range of practical skills, using industry standard software. Where applicable, assessments will be practicably based.
Students will also develop a range of skills and personal qualities essential for working life. These skills will enable students to make an immediate contribution in the working world. Learners will study eight units, such as:
Computer games design and development (including mobile apps)
Project design and implementation and evaluation
Business skills for e-commerce
Employability and professional development
Event driven programming solutions (C#)
Career prospects; Further studies
The HNC Diploma in Computing and Systems Development will allow students to gain entry to the first year of computing degrees at the University of Ulster and into the second year of computing degrees at a variety of universities outside of Northern Ireland. This course is also suitable for students who have applied to the University of Ulster to do a degree in computing, but who were unsuccessful because their grades were not high enough.
Relevant work experience or a level 3 qualification, ideally in a related subject. Plus: GCSEs at grade A* to C to include English language and Mathematics are recommended. Other entry routes: International qualifications/work experience will be considered on an individual basis.
