I must ask that question as I think Sega have screwed it up completely, several things have annoyed me about the new Sonic. Firstly, Dr. Robotnik’s name changed to Dr. Eggman! Please, that without any doubts, has to be worst name change in the history of mankind. Secondly, the introduction of such pathetic characters such as Amy, Cream and Big… I mean Amy was alright… in SONIC CD and Cream being able to fly using her ears, to me that sounds like she’s a reject from Mario and Tails being able to fly by spinning his two tails like a rotor blade is a lot more plausible. Thirdly, the utterly atrocious voice acting that seem to plague the series. Forthly, the terrible and awful new cartoon series which is just as bad as the others before it and finally, the sheer speed of the new games (Sonic Heroes and onwards) like speed was okay in the early ’90’s you were able to keep up with him but not in the new games, speed is a nuisance. I think Sega have taken Sonic down new routes which don’t work for me and I can see the death of the franchise soon. The upcoming Shadow the Hedgehog is one Sonic game I can live without…

I think you might be right for the 3D console versions, but Sonic Rush on the DS looks really cool. Back to basics with additional ideas, and that cool sense of speed that was somewhat controllable.

Was the Sonic Adventure series that really threw me off with its crazy camera and them expecting you to know which way to direct sonic as he flew off a spring past the camera only to fall into nothing-ness. And yea the voice acting was terrible and sonic in the city with real people was weird. I’m stickin to my vote purely cause the new DS game is very appealing to me.

Though I have to say he never held a candle to Mario….

I think you might be right there, Sonic Rush might be the series only saving grace but keep this in mind I was hugely let down by Sonic Advance 2 & 3 mainly due to them putting new ideas into it rather than the good old basics and I also found them to be smidge too easy, so my hopes aren’t too high and I’m saying yours shouldn’t be either.

I agree the camera angles were a bit bad in sonic adventure series.

Shadow the hedgehog i reckon will restore ye’re fate when it hits the shelves next friday, definately a darker game. Also next installment of sonic on the 360 looks very cool, fully interactive environments, motion blurring etc.

The boxart alone was enough to turn me off it, my faith in it and the future of sonic has been well and truly smashed! What I’d like to see is a 2D/3D sonic game on the ps2

The only good sonic game ever didnt even have sonic in it (kinda), and it was Dr Robotniks mean bean machine for the sega mega drive, all the platform games got tiring after sonic 1!

Hrm, original Sonic games on the Mega Drive were great IMO, but to be honest I always preferred Mario. Sonic was just too “in your face” for me…plus I hated the Sega Kiddies, with their bad graphics and terrible sound in their machines..

      *sits back and waits*

Sonic X, the cartoon, is indeed terrible. I can vaguly remember the original series being quiet enjoyable, back when cartoons were based less on the things kids can collect and more on..well like…things blowing up and stuff… :D

Dr. Robotnik was always called Dr. Eggman in japan they changed it to Robotnik for the west, but there did not for the new versions, remember the death egg? (i think Robotnik is a cooler name).

Sonic adventure was the first DC game i played, i thought it was great, SA 2 was good, but not great. I’m looking forward to the 360 version as i here its going back it its roots.

personally i think Sonic has always was better than mario, not that marios bad just not as good as sonic.

btw i don’t think the franchise will die any time soon as sonic heroes sold by the bucket load (i remember seeing it in the top 20 with something like 58 weeks beside it)

i like shadow in SA 2 but not sure about this new game

Can I say I’ve now played Shadow the Hedgehog and it was just as I expected it to be, a big pile of crap.

Yes, the reviews havnt been too kind to it so far.

Yea I perfer Robotnik to be honest. I mean, it was just perfect for those American style slags…”Dr. Robuttnik” in the original cartoon…oh how I laughed… :D

Sega’s lost control of Sonic, he’s now a cartoon character not a videogame character

I think 3D has destroyed Sonic, what Sega should really do is go back and re-create Sonic in 2D on the new consoles regardless of the console’s power

Sadly pretty graphics will always sell more than quality gameplay(most of the time). Maybe a sonic game in the Viewtiful Joe styling?

That would be pretty ninja alright, you could really go to town graphics wise when he gets the Chaos Emeralds with such a styling…

      What? Where’s that phrasing from?

Anyway, I wanted to ask others who have Sonic Rush on DS if they that the level music was a small bit dodgy I mean if you felt the music wasn’t quite right because I do.

saw a interesting (for this topic) post in the dcemu forums

Sega just really needs to create another classic Sonic-Adventure-style game for the PSP. I still play it every week. I must have beaten it 16 times. The choice of characters (not teams or sides) made it so much fun, and the adventure stages provided many glitches (which are my favorite part).[/quote:f4dfde6dab]

i’m suprise that someone called sonic adventure the classic one…. but i guess its what u grow up with.

i’d have to agree with that person there… Sonic Adventure is the only good 3D Sonic as none afterwards were any good. i think Sonic became crap when Sega went out of the console business and Sonic became a freelance character if you know what I mean

I think Sonic’s Unique Selling Point was his apparent speed, and since thats no longer unique, he’s just another sprite.

Besides, I’d save if ya gave Mario an Invincibility-Star, on a straight stretch, he’d beat sonic no problem. Someone get TOP GEAR on the phone…

what u nuts! have u played sonic 2 on the Chemical Plant zone…. hes so fast he goes of the screen doing the loop-D-loops

Dude, let go. Sonic is over. Sure, he had the whole ‘attitude’ thing going on, with ya know, the foot-tapping sprite cycle if you left him standing still, and his loop-de-loops were novel, but there’s a quintessential element missing that really leaves sonic in the first division.

He doesn’t have an italian brother, and fellow-plumber named Luigi.

      Ok, that a knee-jerk reaction.

Sonic deserves alot of merit. dug it out, and gave it a spin (pardon the uhh…pun), and yeah, he was fast. 2D fast.

Played him on the GameGear too. That was pretty smooth also.

But does his friends live in little mushroom houses? can he turn into a Frog? A Raccoon? I think not!

And finally, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I would like to bring this argument to a close by offering my final piece of evidence.

      Exhibit G.

I think Sonic was a hero of his generation. However, games have moved on and Sonic has been left behind for the most part. Maybe his day will come again, but he’s taking a backseat at the moment.
