Course Overview

The Master of Science in Software Engineering degree at NUI Maynooth exposes graduates in Computer Science and related disciplines to the many facets of this complex area – the technical, the methodological, the organizational – so that successful participants will subsequently be able to lead major projects in software engineering in many industrial and commercial sectors.

Course content

The taught modules are delivered over two semesters, followed by the work placement and dissertation.

Participants will be required to complete a six-month period working in an industrial environment and to present a dissertation on issues pertaining to the execution of this work. Alternatively students may opt for a research-based project that is not based on their work placement.

Career prospects; Further studies

Students are qualified for many jobs in the software industry. Many students gain full-time employment with the company who sponsor their work placement. Past graduates in the Masters programme have been accepted for membership of the IEI. Associate membership (AIEI) has been granted to those graduates with less than 2 years work experience, with Ordinary membership (MIEI) granted after a minimum of 2 full years work experience.

Entry requirements

Admission will normally be restricted to graduates who have achieved a good honours degree in Computer Science or a discipline involving significant amounts of practical and theoretical issues in computer science. Note that this degree requires students to have a good initial knowledge of Computer Science, and ability in Mathematics. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.
