As you all know I’ve been a little bit busy of late writing a book, on well yes, games…

well the first draft has gone to the publishers and if they decide not to put it in the bin then I have to come up with a cool title…

book covers games, the industry and game players. It is a textbook aimed at undergradate students of media and game studies as well as any interested in an overview…

titles already used by books in the area..

From Barbie Doll to Mortal Kombat
      All in a Game
      Digital Play
      Joystick Nation
      Trigger Happy..

      any good ideas…?

      Aphra.

Well, I know most industry players, journos and other intersted parties usually refer to ‘hardware’ generations – but it’s been going nigh-on 30 years…

I started on a CBS when they were selling them new 20-odd yeard ago, and I now have a daughter – so it seemed to me like we now have a ‘first’ generation of gamers, putting aside the industry’s vagaries over the period.

      what about
      “Insert Coin”
(or I guess “Player 1 Insert Coin, but that’s less snappy)

You could say it’s some sort of interesting play, because it captures the industry and commercial aspects of video games, as well as analysing the the associated costs of videogame culture.

Question: when do we get a read?

      culchie:

“Usually found in rural areas apart from about once a year when they venture into big towns and cities to find out what this urbanisation thing is all about. They spend most their day in muddy fields feeding their herds. The speak a unique language which can only be understood by other culchies”

Difficult to make a suggestion without a clear idea of the nature of the book (academic like Trigger Happy? anecdotal like Joystick Nation?) but I’ve always liked:

      Gamework
      or
      Gameworks

as the title to the book I have in my head but have not written. Might suit if the essays look at gaming from the industry perspective in addition to the players.

As I said, difficult to say without more information.

I’d probably “gameplay” these days as it seems to have gotten an unfairly bad rep as a descriptor.

Unless it was as part of a title like:

      Gamework ,
      Gameplay

or the like. That would work.

Could make for a lovely dual image cover. I’ve thought of a nice idea I could scribble out on paper and post up if you like.

Actually, do you get a choice of graphic artist? If so then no Pacman or Space Invaders on the cover. Please!

I would love to Aphra, seeing as I haven’t gotten to even ONE yet but I doubt I can make it! My workload down here in Clonmel is rather heavy and I never seem to get the time (translation: another moaning culchie). I blame the Media100.

I really must get to one of these gatherings. I’m really interested in meeting a lot of the people who post here and share my nonsense ideas.

As regards the cover, I think real people would be interesting but I imagine graphic designers would dress them up in “GAMERZ CLOTHEZ” and look like something out of Hackers the Movie.

The realistic approach sounds great. Here’s hoping the publishers like it..
