I remember reading a very interesting article that was published around the time Nintendo sold it’s stake in Rare to Microsoft that gave the background on Microsoft’s entry into the console gaming market.
Basically it told how the Xbox was their 3rd choice for breaking into the market, the 2nd choice had been partnership with Sega, which was demonstrated most visibly by the use of Windows CE as the OS on the Dreamcast.
Their first option was apparently a takeover of Nintendo that they tried back in the late 90’s

They also, all most bought Square Enix but at the last minute Square asked for double the cash.
