First time I saw it I felt the same, but on repeated viewings it improves significantly. You can see he was trying to take the franchise new places, and the problems on set (significant script problems and multiple rewrites – not to mention Ms. Weaver’s insistence that (a) Ripley be bald, (b) Ripley have a love interest, and (c) that Ripley dies – all before she’d actually read the intial script) didn’t help
I think you’d also have to cut him slack as it was his first feature…
But maybe that’s just me. I DO want to have his baby after all
