This may be an obvious question, but how exactly do you access your inbox? This may sound silly, but so far the only way I know to access it (aside from typing in the url), is to send a private message and then follow the link on the screen that pops up. Also, is there any alert or message on the forums that let you know when you have an unread private message? Most forums I know have at least a number that pops up that lets you know if there is anything unread in your message box.

yes when you log in on the home page your profile will come up on the left hand side including if you have any new messages
