      Hi guys,

Just to let you know that plans for CGAMES to be held in the DIT from 22-24 November are at an advanced stage. We have had about 40 papers submitted and the call is open for another few days. Steve Collins and Aphra Kerr will both give keynote speeches and we have organised a 1 day workshop on games design for secondary school students with Ernest Adams. There are tracks on all aspects of computer games.

We are considering havaing an industry panel on Thursday morning of the conference instead of a key note speech. What do you guys think? Would any of you be interested in participating? What should the theme be if we did have one?

BTW Even if you are not attending the conference, you are invited to the the official launch of our Degree in Computer Science (DT228) on Wednesday 22nd at 6pm in DIT Aungier St. The degree has a strong games programming component, with a games programming stream in 3rd and 4th year. The stream covers Maths & physics for games, DirectX programming, AI, Sound, mobile, modding etc.

      For more information see:

http://www.comp.dit.ie/cgames or send me an email bryan.duggan@comp.dit.ie

      Hope to see you there!

      thanks Bryan for the update

there is an industry panel at the IT&T conference in Carlow later this month on the future of game development in Ireland – so that topic is probably out.

Who’s organising this? I am in Dublin all that week (mainly for the Tool gig in the Point!), and I’d be happy to volunteer my humble abilities for running registration desks or whatever, since I doubt I’ll register myself. I’ll probably be hanging around like a bad smell anyway, so it’s a way to kill time between coffee breaks :D

Aphra – despite being sure that your curiosity arises more from the confusion engendered by me writing about gigs with tools in them, than interest in the band…here’s a video:

      Some nice CG.

Thanks for the tip on the volunteering. Hope to see everyone there.

      CGames people:

Is there a program available that has the author names included as well as the paper titles?

There is now – look at the program of events on the CGames site.

Are gamedevelopers people meeting up at this? I’ve only met Aphra and Idora, and I’m not sure I’ll see them about – anything planned?

I intend to go to along Thursday and Friday, and perhaps Wednesday as I volunteered to help out but am not sure if I’m needed yet. And of course there’s the shindig on Friday night.

was at the CGames conf dinner last night and by all accounts it is going very well with great reports of Steve’s opening plenary and the previous night’s event in the Xbox play centre.

I was spreading the word about the shindig Friday night and it looks like we might get Ernest Adams to come along too as he is flying in for the workshop on Sat.

congrats to all involved from DIT in the CGames conference. It seems to have run really smoothly and signs are good for games research in Ireland – lots of papers from Irish unis.

daymo..seemed to go well, apart from my timing. I suppose at this stage I can just talk and talk. Audience were pretty generous to my stuff given that they were mainly from computer science.

got interviewed for this Friday’s IT business and tech section and the journo was in my session too. I could change my mind about how it went after seeing that.

im..lost – were you there friday night? Ernest was great to come in to the pub given that he was facing over 100 secondary school kids the next day.

For me, the best bit of the whole conference was when Brian went to get up out of his chair – and then just straight fell on the floor! Not sure how many people saw it, but I was in bits

      Brian – care to comment?

Are you STILL laughing at that?????
The best bit for me was finding a guilty looking Lagrange after skiving off the conference to play Guitar Hero in Game, after listening to him talk about it non-stop for the whole conference..

[/quote:1451ce4757]yeah, I saw it. It was well made but pretty much presented one guys (former army office, who now leads Killology(!) research full time) views on how damaging violent games were. While extremely one-sided for most part, (only two snippets argued FOR games, incl. Doug Lowenstein) it was pretty persuasive in some areas. Didn’t do us much good, put it that way

Yeah I was watching it, it was ok it was fairly unbiased i thought, the americans violently against it were potrayed in a way which made them look very extreme, which was good for once. Although it showed Jack Thompson in a false light. portrayed him as this hero who travels around being the parents voice against the industry. that sucked, although it was made in 2003 so games like vice city was only out so that was on the agenda lots. And they showed WAY too much of “postal” ( btw w, was postal even released outside of the US? ) which is all the angry congress members used for their arguements.

And they left the age rating process until near the end without mentioning it throughout, even if it did show amazingly clear that the parents are responsible etc.

Climate is definitely a bit different now then when that was made in 2003

I’ve seen it too. Can be bought over the internet too

Agree with the portrayal of Jack Thompson… he looked almost normal!
