http://daretobedigital.com/I did this last year and it is a fantastic oppurtunity for anybody trying to get into the industry. The catch is I think at least three of the five on the team has to be still in third level education (I wasn’t), and you have to have less than six months experience in the games industry. The team has to be a mix of artists and programmers (obviously). I had an amazing time and met lots of great people there and am actually heading back to Dundee for a little reunion later this month with some of the teams. You get a good bit of money for your ten weeks work (tax free), you get free accomodation (they pile everybody into one big building so the parties are great! ) and Dundee is quite a cool little city really.
Teams came from all over the world last year (Norway, Canada, India, as far away as China even) so everyone is eligible irrespective of where they live.So if you have a few artist/programmer mates and a great innovative idea for a game, I suggest you apply Even if you don’t, check the dare message board to see if anyone is looking for someone with your skills (or post yourself). I only met the people in my team during preparations for the comp, so it can be done that way too. Personally I can’t reccomend the competition enough, it really is a brilliant scheme.

Ditto.
I took part in 2003 I think it was…if you’re a student and you want to get into games, you should definitely take a look at this. -

Exact same boat for me. Wouldn’t have gotten my job without dare.
Highly recommended folks!

I did some mentoring with DTBD teams a few years back, and was a judge on one of the regional panels at one stage. I was really impressed by the quality of the games the students produced and how much they get out of the whole experience.
It’s a great way to break into the games industry – having a successful DTBD project on your CV clearly shows that you have talent and a passion for making games. Go for it!

I’m going to add an extra recommendation for this too!
I was part of the Irish team last year, and had a fantastic summer in Dundee – lots of work and play in equal measures thanks to those parties :P -

Hmm. Don’t really see what this has to do with Dare Mr.Burns. Reads like more of a egotistical rant to me (no offence). The people you have described there (jobless I mean, not lacking in any goals) describes about 95% of last years Dare participants to this day (including me). Me and my fellow participants pretty much work at out craft every single day, and yet maybe 4 or 5 of the 70 or so have received offers following the competition. The industry is VERY different from when you got into it, it sounds like. Count yourself lucky ;)

Thanks Squash for berating me in your first sentence, anyhoo I makes no bones about being egotisitical, it makes me proactive and why I get things done, and probably why I’m employed and you are not. True there may be less jobs going but to blame just the industry seems a bit of a copout.
Look the reason I posted this is I believe too many people go in to Dare believing it is going to get them in the industry and while it does help, these people have to realise that it doesnt matter if you’ve made a game for Dare, thats not gonna get you a job. You need to make sure your CV is perfect, your Portfolio, your Proactiveness and most importantly not giving up but adapting and changing to get the job you want, because once you give up and start making excuses you may as well not bother because your going to be doing that for the rest of your life.
Maybe that comes off as egotisitcal but here’s the cool thing about having a massive ego, you dont care.

Welcome Pete. Can only speak from observations re Dare. Regional heats tend to ensure quality teams go through.
Where are you based yourself?

But you guys had heats? We only had interviews…

Nope. I don’t ever remember saying why I would like to do it over :) Or what team I was in. Assumptions are quite often just that…assumptions ;) Dare was a fantastic experience (would I have started the thread otherwise?), I just wish it wasn’t a one time thing. I met so many awesome people there that I still talk to to this day, from all over the world. They should have a Dare Alumni comp.

oh right sorry it was more of a suppostion based on the tone of the message i felt myself and others would come to from reading it, like how you felt my messages have an egotistical tone i felt that message had a butthurt tone. but it seems i was wrong and for that i am sorry.
Hmm i get the feeling getting everyone together for a competition would be a nightmare to organise, but if they could get everyone together for a meetup somewhere a lot of them would be going anway like one of GDCs, or some UK game conference, it would be great yeah especially if people form different years could all meet up together.

Good luck to all the teams, hope there’s some Republic teams going forward!

What stage is the process at this year? Any republic teams got a place? They should know by now…
-
14/05/2010 at 10:28 am #45746AnonymousInactive
Yeah an Irish team from the Republic is in this year with a wii football title. It’s a few guys from Balllyfermot as Art/Design and Programmers from Carlow as far as I know.
If I’ve gotten my facts straight it is great news to see a team collaborate from two different institutions. -
14/05/2010 at 4:43 pm #45747AnonymousInactive
Oh really? Cool, I went to Ballier :) If anyones talking to them make sure to tell them not to use the Wiipointer… once they get to Protoplay the lights in the hall interfere with it. Looking forward to following the Dare blogs this year!
-
15/05/2010 at 1:52 pm #45748AnonymousInactive
I’m not sure if they are using the pointer, I’ve heard a rumor that they have done something crazy like attaching the wiimote to the players foot and use the inbuilt accelerometer as the main control function.
It is interesting that the organisers of DARE haven’t gotten around to accounting for the wiimotes laser pointer yet though, a few of the teams that were in protoplay with us suffered really badly from it. Just don’t put the crazy spotlights in one corner of the room!
I think another team from Ballyfermot got beaten out of the place at DARE by the football game. They had this really cool prototype of a free running race game where you fired disk platforms to constrct your own path across the game environment. It’s a real shame there aren’t more spots open to the Republic.
-
15/05/2010 at 4:40 pm #45749AnonymousInactive
Definitely, especially considering the last of sports titles that go through, it would have been cool to see two in one year. Also that idea with strapping the wiimote to you foot sounds…interesting. If a little dangerous! Looking to hearing more about the teams.
EDIT: I wouldn’t blame Dare for the whole I.R./Light thing…teams should know by now not to use that feature of the wiimote. It’s asking for trouble. Not only because of the strong lights in the hall, but the distance the player would have to be from the sensor to get smooth feedback.

Hey JohnMonkey,
I was one of the guys you were talking to in Ballyfermot about the free running platform game. We didn’t actually enter it into dare this year, we might be going for the indie games festival with it though if we work on it over the summer :)
There game sounds pretty good though :)

I wrote a quick blog post based on my experience with Dare to be Digital, hopefully some of the people going forward this year will find it useful:

Oh right, sorry. I suppose that is one of the problems with DARE is that it is so big for many it become the central focus and everyone assumes that everyone is entering it, be it in their best interests or not!
From what I saw of your game I really it and more importantly I saw a group that was really invested and really eager. Keep going like you’re going and I can see you all producing some very good work.

seems like the Carlow/BCFE football game got through. Best of luck to them. I guess they will be heading over in the next week.

Yep they did. As far as I am aware, there are teams already over there (according to twitter) so maybe they are already all in Dundee. (organisers probably got them into the country as early as possible due to that volcano :P)
Best of luck guys :D
