Hey all. Well this is my second and final year in my at my BTEC National Diploma in E-Media and for my FMP I am going to do something games related. So far I have been thinking about a Gears of War PC single player level or something along the lines of that or a really good multiplayer level. So I am looking for some advice I will be looking for a job as a level designer when I finish this so what do you guys think the best route would be to take.

      Thanks

And just before anyone says it I am only looking for a bit of advice not someone to tell me what to do.

      Hi Matthew,
I didn’t really get the question, can you explain further – advice in what area?
I saw from your previous posts you already have unreal level making experience so I take it the jump to unreal 6 is not the issue. If you want a job as a level designer clearly there can be no question that a level should be your project if your lectures are on board with that. So are you wondering if single player or multi player will be more impressive to a potential employer?

If so can’t say I know but which ever involves more custom scripting that will set you apart would be my guess. I know good level architecture/pacing choke points etc are important but I would think scripting ability is becoming more and more important. Would make the distinction between you and Joe Soap who just draws up a map and plops bots in.

(For anyone reading who does not have level making experience here is a 6min vid of the basics involved in Level Designing with Gears of War filmed at epic)

Chears. I think I am going with a short Gears of War PC singleplayer Level but with plenty of detail and scripting. Thanks for the video link as well. :D

Cool. Best of luck and be sure to post some wip shots when you get down to making the level.

I think more companies are turning to python as a scripting language. Perhaps ask the pro guys here what they use in house (Even if not working on FPS) if you can get them to tell ya.

Been getting to grips with python myself recently but for more mundane tasks as it is a general purpose script language. Could be worthwhile having it on your CV if you have the time but UnrealScript is obviously where you will need to spend time on for this project and is nicely integrated with the rest of the unreal tools.

      Plenty of tutorials for UnrealScript.

Here is gamasutras’ overview of python – though perhaps more programmer than level designer centered.

      We use Lua.

Those unreal script tutorials are pretty basic and narrow. You can make a slightttly different unreal, but nothing else really

Alot of the industry use lua as a scripting language in game, as it has a low memory footprint. Personally, never hurts to have a few scripting languages on the c.v. I’ve used python and perl a bit here for build scripts etc way back at the start until we got some more solid infrastructure in place. But ya learn as much as you can, it all looks good.

Nifty when did you start working at lionhead? Pretty recently right? Seems to be a good few of the gd.ie lads are getting the break into the industry over here. good to see\hear

Did an internship in july and started properly on the 31st as a designer. One other Irish here (must remember name) and quite a few Dare people.

Btw rumour has it that codemasters are recruiting to develop an FPS (probably Operation Flashpoint 2) in their new guildford office. It might be worth while for students to steer their portfolios towards modern warfare a bit.

Its not a rumour nifty, OFP2 has been in production at Codemasters in southam\leamington for over a year now, no big secret, its advertised in edge every month their hiring for it :).

They’ve been hiring for a long while now, mostly people from the states and canada. I used to drinking with a few of the producers (before they moved on to other thing) and still drink with a few of the coders on the team who came from canada. The Guildford office I reckon was setup to steal\poach Criterion and Climax heads (lets not forget EA makes burnout and its tough competition getting good game programmers who know how to make successful driving games in the midlands, theres alot of tough competition :-) ) and Codemasters makes Dirt and the pending Race Driver One, which could be the game in development down there. OF2 I think is due out sometime May\June 08 on pc. But Codies always hires grads so worth chucking in a c.v. i guess.

EA seems to be consolidating into its guildford office, so there’s the burnout, harry potter and other teams all in that one office. The rumours were about a new FPS so if OFP2 is near year out I can’t imagine thats the one.

I think I’m gonna stick where I am for the time being. Always wanted to make a fantasy RPG :)

Remember EA also makes black down there, so reckon codies if they were making another FPS they could get some of those guys maybe.. Although i have a solid idea what the title is, but ill remain silent :)

Fantasy RPG, so i take it your on Fable .. whats pete like to work for??

      its common knowledge

      http://www.thechaosengine.com

You need to email the admin from your work email and give your credentials. After which they check ya out to see if you are who you are(the industry is small they generally have contacts everywhere, its like the stone cutters :) ), then you get acces from them. Usually takes a few months, unless ya know an admin or something and you hear back right away. More often than not they have such a back log and 90% of it being non industry trying to get it, that you’ll never get a response. I know a few guys here who have been in the industry for years and their still waiting on a reply. its luck i guess.

A few months? Only takes a few days, depending on how busy the admins are :) Work email address is the main thing, proves you’re in the industry.

Well i know when i applied 2 of us applied the same day, i got a response about a month later and the other guy hasent to this day. Only reason i got a reply was cause i ran into somone who knew him and told him to check his mail on CE and sign me up :P He said they get hundreds a day from noobs wanting in. Although its worth getting, as theres some very good articles on there.

Crikey, I must have joined at a good time.
Think one of the admins was at the neworking middleware company that we were using at the time, so maybe that helped.
