bump
just wanted to say that we had a few lurkers in the chat room and I have got 2 bots in the room so we can keep it.I was thinking so many people can’t make shin digs for travelling reasons etc, we could have a IRC (chat room) shin dig for the people that live far away…. or is that just too geeky. Just an idea ;)
anyway, any chance of getting this topic sticky’ed?

I think that the forum is definitely the best tool for communication on gd.ie, as live chats have many dis-advantages ( threads are structured and evolve over time with many participants, chat is either live and short/snappy, or the log of the chat is intermixed with more than one conversation ).
Saying that, there are times when a live chat tool ( like IRC ) could be useful, even just to build more of a sense of community by using it as a virtual shindig ( but of course not to replace the physical one – a virtual pint doesn’t taste just as good! :)
More members would be able to attend a pre-arranged virtual chat / shindig, as location no longer becomes an issue.

I 100% agree mal. An IRC chat room should not replace forums, forums are much better for good structured conversations/debates. On #dcemu we use it for coders to have quick chats to bounce ideas of each other (much quicker than forum) and for staff to discuss matters (again quicker than in the forum). We also use to to mess and talk a load of old balls too ;)
Also you do get to know people better on IRC than forums I find. But yeah, your right it does not beat a real pub and pint! (/me opens a tin of beer, beside the P.C.) ;)

It’s definitely too early to post this, but as we’re chatting about online chat tools, what the hell! :P
At CanDo, we’re working on a very early prototype to see if it is possible to have an easy to use, but 3D, chat prototype.
It uses Shockwave, and allows users to chat with other people at the same table. You can also move between tables, which could be set up to facilitate certain types of conversation ( eg coding, art etc ).

Many thanks to the gd.ie members that checked out the room – it was a lot of fun having a chat with people from the boards in a more real-time way!
IMHO, it definitely showed that having a real-time chat facility for gd.ie is a great way for members to get to know each other a bit better.
If an online shindig was arranged at key times ( eg once a month, a few weeks after the physical shindig ), it could be a great asset.
Is anyone up for participating in an initial test – say on Wednesday at 5pm or so, just after work? If we can get several members in at the same time, it’ll be interesting to see how the type of chat differs from the possibly more formal syle of forum discussion.
Raise your hand if you’re up for it! :)

Hi Mal,
I think this a great idea [0] :) Would this be using IRC, or your (very nice looking) shockwave app? Problem is there’s no shockwave plugin available for Linux :)
