Just branching this off a bit from a previous posting regarding a model of Chu Chullainn…

Out of interest, how many people here have an idea / ideas for games based on Irish culture, legends ( Fianna, Tir Na Nog, Children of Lir ), sports ( hurley, gaelic ) etc.

I have at least 20, out of which I’ll probably get about none of them done ( for time and commercial reasons ).

We were going to do one for a uni project once.
But then we realised it would be a hack ‘n slash type game and they’re quite hard to pull off, so decided against it.

i heard of the rummor mill that someone was making a hurley/gaelic game… but that was a while ago now…

i was helping out a homebrew coder with a zelda clone type game. give him some ideas for gameplay i used so irish legends to come up with a story. (the navin fort center is just a 1/2 mile from were i live, and those stories are a sheld load better that some of the plots game have today)

Yeah, what ever happened with that hurling thing. There was an irish guy doing a management type game, think he was in waterford or somewhere and he had the backing of the players and he was in talks with Microsoft…and then there was the Australian developer who was doing the sports sim type game and they had the backing of the GAA and were talking to Sony if I remember correctly.
Big cuffuffle at the time and then you hear nothing about either of them…

Edit: Although if someone one doing a Hurling game, I think I’d actually like it to be EA….sports games they can do

yeah i think the hurling game rumour was only that.

i heard that it was being developed by some australian group who previously developed an aussie rules game.

although it would be cool to play one, would have to be very fast and allow you to bit the crap out of each out with sticks , so omen in a way it could be similar to your hack&slash.

Irish myths and legends would lend themselves well to an RPG type game……

Possibly care to share them with us, Mal? :)

I’ve always planned to create a game based on Irish history at one time or another. The most probable time will be over the next few years in the form of a mod project. Can’t pretend that I’ve put too much thought into it. One idea was to have a alternative history where we’re in present times but a Gaelic empire still reigns strong. Got back to thinking about some sort of Celtic history game last week when I was reading Pete’s book on it. (Yes, believe it or not he has a book unrelated to the Hoff!)

      > Possibly care to share them with us, Mal?

      A few off the bat…

      1) Story based games based on Irish legends. Monkey-Island style, but with pseudo 3D environments etc.

      2) Sports games, these are pretty obvious. Hurley / Camogie, Gaelic,

      3) Strategy games. Think high-level style like Civilisation, or even meduim style quicker ones, like 3D Risk but with Irish counties, choosing different time zones like Fianna time, current times ( might be a bit too politically hot at the mo ) etc.

      4) Plain old action style games, using a Celtic art style, and celtic based characters. Fight your way through hordes of X’s and Y’s to end up at the land of Tir Na Nog. Have a group you control called the Fianna.

Use myths as the basis for certain game elements. Eg fly to another area using a “Children of Lir” spell to get wings. Find and eat the Salmon of Knowledge to be able to read certain artifacts. The list could go on.

      5) Hoirish style games. Games involving Leprechauns collecting their pots of gold, drunk village idiots chasing pints ( more pints = less control, maybe The Sims style where you have to get them to the toilet after x pints if your chatting up birds, otherwise they start doing the jig etc )

There are loads of types of games out there, I’m sure EVERYONE has a unique idea that of course everyone else has already thought up or will think up given time, and that no-one has the time to implement. As it’s quite niche market ( Ireland, some US interest, possibly Japan with heavy culture emphasis ), most of these games wouldn’t be too commercially viable, ie they’ll be put on the backburner.

There is the Lord Of The Rings world right? The Irish culture would be the next best thing if not much much better

I’ve been chatting with a friend about this topic. Together we know about as much Irish history as the dog around the corner, but we’re both quite intriged. As Mal said, many of the concepts related to the subject may not be commercially viable.

The good thing is about mod development is that it doesn’t have to be. Sure it helps if you want it to be a success, but not if you’re just trying to get some experience. This is something I may look further into. One idea would be to mod Age of Empires and have the four kingdoms of Ulster, Connacht, Munster and Leinster all kicking the life out of each other as well as making alliances and building up their armies. Anyway, I’ll think about it tomorrow on a fresh mind. :)

Hi Neil, and welcome to our little demonic world…..bwahahahaha…..

      *ahem*

Please no, any game that promotes the “get me pot ‘o gold” or “irish drunkards” stereotype is right out as far as I’m concerned.
