Activision-Blizzard are selling publishing rights for Ghostbusters game even though it’s nearly finished if going by planned October release date. Eh why? Thought every mag preview said it was gona sell like hotcakes.

If I don’t have a game with a proton pack by Christmas I will be miffed. Miffed I say. All this realignment talk sounds legit but with a game this anticipated sounds odd.

It’s not inconceivable that a publisher might not publish a finished game due to the cost of marketing it (sometimes matching or more the development costs) probably being high and returns risky, but I find that hard to believe for a Ghostbusters game. Maybe there’s some weird licensing deal related to the franchise that makes it less worthwhile for the publisher, or maybe they think they can offload it for a decent price to another publisher. Either way, I’m with you, this is a weird one, and there’s more to this story yet.

Alot of the budget for Ghost Busters I would imagine would be marketing. As for selling like hot cakes, doubt it. This license apparently has been bouncing around for a while. If it was so lucrative it’d have been made already :) Also perhaps final payments on licenses happen only when it hits shelves.. Also there hasent been much coverage of this game, especially if it out in October.

I am however a little worried with the way this merger has went down. I would regard High Moon Studios and Radical to be top developers and a bit of a shame their getting axes brought to them. I recently played Bourne Conspiracy and throughly enjoyed it. Looks and played great and proved it is possible to do something decent with tv/movie/book licenses. Also Prototype looked extremely promising.

Hope Swordfish in the UK get bought by someone good. I’ve definately seen too many studios and mates being axed in the last few months to do me a life time. How many we at in the last few months ?? (SRS, Razorworks, Venom).

Maybe they got a good deal on license now that further film sequels very unlikely?

Was #7 on IGN Xbox 360’s Most Anticipated Games of 2008
Prototype was #5. Not getting into how reputable ign is I think being in top ten anticipated lists is an indicator that sales will be good but coverage definitely needs to be upped.

IMHO I wouldnt put much mass in ign’s anticipated games (heavenly sword was up there last year) and we know how well that did.
Means zero for the majority on that list, I know plenty of games on list like these in the past which have flopped. Marketing at the end of the day makes or breaks your game. I would put Too Human as my latest tip for failure..lol

Sure Ghostbusters would have been looked forward to, but would people lash out 60 euro on a game cause its on this list. Its gotta worth a spend of hard cash, at the end of the day reviews mean very little, consumer makes up their own mind.

Well I for one has definitely been looking forward to this game for a while now and would love to get my hands on it this side of the holidays! Also anyone I’ve told about this seems excited as well but there itself is the problem ….. no one knows about it! Marketing has been minimal to say the least!

Activision-Blizzard developments "have presented [Sony Pictures Consumer Products, owner of Ghostbusters IP] with an opportunity to re-evaluate the game release marketing strategy to potentially coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original film in ’09."

Miffed. 09 better mean January first.

lol, thought so alright."Presented with an opportunity", great guys alright helping Sony out like that, giving them a break.

They want Sony to spend the marketing budget, because I reckon its going to be very large, in order to push Ghostbusters to the masses. Biggest challenge is pulling in the teens because most of them probably dont know much about the franchise as it was well before their time.

As for 09 Jan dunno, could be any time really because a 25th anniversary for companies run all year. They wouldnt want to leave it too long though as every day you delay your tech and game get older looking.
