      .

Q1: Are these specs good for pushing some pixels and polygons around?

Q2: What is the most important piece of hardware to achive speed and smooth handling of big files?[/quote:ec449884e3]

      Q1 – sound decent enough

Q2 – Speed and smooth handling – In Max, your graphics card is used for viewport acceleration only, so for navigation of big scenes this would be key. For rendering speed, CPU and RAM are most important. The dual core CPU is a good choice, Max and ZBrush both make use of multi core and multithreading. I’d be surprised if the latest Photoshop (CS3) didn’t utilise all procs too.

      So, I went with:

      Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Processor (2.4GHz, 1066MHz,4MB cache)

      XP professional ( feck Vista ;P )

      4GB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM

      500GB HardDrive

      256MB nVidia GeForce 8600GTS

      and so on…

So far, very fast and very smooth, I’m happy.

Once again thanks Pete for the advice and thanks to all who voted for the graphics card.

Including 20" UltraSharp (1680 by 1050 pixels) Wide aspect Digital/Analogue Flat screen… and
      3 years warranty.

      1,194.00 ex.VAT

Well I ‘m an illustrator and make living using PhotoShop and stuff, so… it’ll be put to good use

That’s a good price…did you buy it from somewhere or did you build it yourself?

It was from Dell, but I made a decisions of what goes in (processor, memory, etc.) .
