As the review embargo was lifted today Eurogamer have just awarded GTA IV a 10/10 score

      http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=134493&page=1

"Otherwise, GTA IV is the 10/10 you were expecting. Almost everything you do in Liberty City would be good enough to drive its own game, and the best parts would be good enough to outrun the competition, but the reason it works so well is that Rockstar has made a game that requires no patience to play. This, as much as its usual coherency and the best script in the series, is what makes GTA IV the best openworld game yet, and why it will take something miraculous to rob it of game of the year status."

IGN have also awarded a 10/10 score

      Other reviews:

      OXM UK: 10/10
      1UP: A+
      Team Xbox: 10
      Game trailers: 9.8

Its more or less 10’s all round.

      hmm

I think reviewers might be getting overly excited (like they did with Bioshock, Halo 3 etc..)

I’m sure it will be great (Its making me buy a 360!) but I am wary of 10/10 scores.

      My thoughts exactly {that being said, I love both H3 & Bioshock}.
I sometimes wonder if for some of the bigger publications {1up etc} that the choice of reviewer effects it.
It’s really to know what to think.

And yes I am planning to pick it up tomorrow..

eurogamer judgement mean nothing for me.

the reviewer give its 10/10, yet says theres popping and frame drops throughout the game. that for me would knock a mark or two off.

for a game to be 10/10 it needs to tick everything flawlessly.

      graphics,audio, online, gameplay.

alot of the time i think you find the review and the score probably arent done by the same guy. ;) score is done by the financial officers maybe?

After seeing the IGN video review it really does sound like a 10/10 to me. I am personally more a fan of 1UP’s reviews they have a much better score system (A+ to F).

Advertising is really starting to kick in now but there was nowhere near as much hype for this one compared to past versions.

personaly I would rather see no score system what so ever.

Completely agree with you, not only do I think 1up’s review rating change was a good idea, I think I would ultimately prefer a non-score system.
It’s the subject of the review that matters..

Peter: Technically, a lot of reviewers argue that a 10/10 doesn’t mean the game is flawless or without imperfections, just that it’s good enough for a fricken awesome experience.

Peter_b, the bugs you have mentioned, while obvious to the eagle eyed game developer, would have no bearing on the game experience for the average gamer out there i.e. the core audience for GTA. People are more than willing to forgive these minor issues when they are part of such an enjoyable game experience. I have yet to play IV, but if the previous leaps in quality of the series is anything to go by, it’s gonna be a hell of alot of fun!

I wouldn’t agree with that. You don’t have to be a developer to notice bugs, and bugs like that are annoying to everyone (and surprising at this development stage of a game). I won’t be playing GTA anyway, as it’s all gas, gas, honk, gas, brake, honk, but in other games with bugs present, I can assure you do it does rankle with non developers.

      Peter,
I haven’t been seeing any of the bugs that you mentioned, but I definetly agree on the door collision detection being severly limited.
I can get past it though, this seems to be the first GTA I’m actually enjoying {after the 1st hour it picked up for me}.

Oh yeah… I have a leaving cert in 34 days..

well mate i didnt make it up.. drive down by the city wall area (you do a few missions for brucie), you’ll see the lots of buildings popping in and out. Also drive really fast along the bridge into town and the whole town pops in, instantly.

Majority of doors do the collision ropiness, best example is at your safe house.

but yes for the traditional gta game play you’ll look beyond this. I simply said that 10 seemed abit too generous. Although i will say the online multiplayer works well, as theres always ppl in the lobbies to play with. although if gta didnt have ppl in a lobby to play online no game would, so their aided in that task ;)

Still though kudos to rockstar its a nice installment

I managed to get a copy in Smyths in Blanch after a near town-wide search in Dublin and I love it! Its a little raggedy round the edges definition wise but the animation and characterisation are superb. The gameplay is great too, I’d say I’ve clocked up about 10 hours so far and only done 1 or 2 missions, its too much fun just prickin’ round!
