i don’t own an ipod yet .. am waiting for a magnificent price drop

but there’s news on the download sales side that Sony and Microsoft will open up their own stores too

itunes being the ipods favoured store.. and on which you can buy my CD :D :D

      http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?selectedItemId=4274954&playListId=4274972

ipods might not be able to use the Microsoft store and Sony will no doubt bring out their own player/recorder too..

i’d wait if i were you.. there’s lots in the offing

      I’d second Padd O’s recommendations… I have 160+ hours of GDC & E3 lectures on mine… plus an entire Teach Yourself Spanish course… and over 2000 MP3s

fantastic yokes, if a tad expensive…

the only thing I’d say against it is that some of the more generic players from Creative & Dell are much less expensive and offer the same kind of storage space – but without the cool Apple look and feel. The Dell even has an analogue of the Ipod’s ‘dial’ interface

The iTrip? I have one too, its illegal here

But its not very good, you have to find a pretty big area of free airspace for a clear signal. Still Handy for the car mind.

I really want an Airport Express though.

Ya, but it only cost an extra $15 so I said I might aswell, the 40 gig version is currently$399, which is about 335 Euros, compared to the Irish retail price which is somewhere in the region of 500 Euros, so ya I agree with Paddy-O, but your model from the states, you’ll only get shafted here.

Just remember to watch it with those obvious white headphones, a lot of people getting them nicked because they’re so obvious :)

I think it was police in Biringham that first came out and told people to get new headphones because they are distinctive and loads of folk were getting mugged.

Its ok for me I just explain to the friendly mugger that the 2nd generation ones are firewire only so it won’t work unless they have a PC with firewire or a Mac. I’m sure they’ll understand.

I don’t think this is correct. It’s illegal in the UK because of the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1949, which forbids use of radio equipment without a licence or an exemption. This is to stop people setting up Pirate Radio Stations (although the iTrip would only facilitate an audience in the catchment area the size of a goldfish pond).

It is also ‘not sold’ in Austria and Iceland, but I don’t believe it is illegal in Ireland. UK companies will ship here.

      15gb mp3 player Eur 269.00
      20gb mp3 player Eur 339.00
      40gb mp3 player Eur 449.00

From Compustore, so they are probably cheaper elsewhere.

Don’t worry I have my own headphones anyway and WILL be ditching the standard I-Pod editions.

I look forward to compiling my entire(300 cd)Cd collection into I-Tunes, should be fun, looks like the rest of you are happy with it.

Oh and one last question guys, whats the story with using the i-Pod as a portable HD?, can you store software on it?, or is it just files and documents?

      :)

You can use the iPod as a portable drive. Just plug it in and Bob’s your uncle. Any types of data.

There’s one in argos, but also need a new phone for playing games on so trying to work out best way to save some money. It looks fancy and it’s 20Gb(5,000 songs). But 8 hours battery life seems kinda crap. My cd player is about 24 hours:

Holds up to 5,000 songs. 8 hours battery life (internal battery).
Up to 25 minute skip protection.
      Earbud headphones.
      AC adapter.
iTunes for Mac and Windows included.
System requirements : Macintosh computer with FireWire port; Mac OS X v10.1.5 or later.
PC with FireWire or USB 2.0 port; Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or Windows XP Home or Professional.
      Size (H)10.4, (W)6.1, (D)1.57cm.
      Weight 156g

Whats the deal with an internal battery for changing/recharging, does anyone know?

Just got my click-wheel 4g ipod the other day.

      <nerd>
It’s currently dual-booting beetween the apple firmware a 2.6.6 uclinux/ kernel. This allows one to play unsupported formats such as ogg, flac etc.. Support is also there for direct ipod to ipod copies via firefire. With ethernet-over-firewire you can even telnet into the ipod or host a website from it :)
      </nerd>

[edit] You can even play tetris on it. A cool project would be a gameboy emulator.

      More info at http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net/

18 months seems pretty reasonable. I’ll have to decide what to waste my summer’s hard work on. That or a phone. But good links. Answers the questions. I take it it would say about whether cables are included or bought seperatly.

      Thanks
      Mick

have you ripped them into MP3 yet? if so, and you use the default firewire connection, transferring them takes no time…
the ripping, on the other hand, is a pain in the butt
