      Hi all,

      Just wondering:

      1. Has anyone here got an iPhone?

      2. Is it any good?

      3. Is there any current games for it?

      4. Are they any good?

      5. Have you tried writing your own for it?

For the longest time, all I have ever wanted was a way to weld my nokia to my PSP and I was a happy camper.

Now, every article on Gamasutra seems to be about the rise and rise of iPhone SDK and all the developers rushin to this new platform.

      http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=34049

Is this all just marketing hype, or is there any substance to these stories?

      B.

No, but Ian Hannigan has an NGage….

Seriously though, I’d also like to know if the Iphone is worth its salt, its very desirable ATM

      Interested in this thread too.
I plan on looking into making some games for it in a month or two. While not a phone I also like the look of coding for the zune. No learning curve with Xna.

      1. Yes

      2. No !

      3. No ! The iPhone comes with no games installed and you can’t download any *officialy*, neither can you download any 3rd party applications ect. You can however if you hack the iPhone (known as jailbreaking, I wont post a link just google iPhone jailbreak). Neither can you play any flash game via safari as it does not support flash (at the moment).

All in all the phone side of the iPhone is pretty naff. You cant do simple things like MMS (so the camera is pretty pointless and you cant take video either), Forwarding messages, Searching contacts…pretty basic and simple stuff..the latest firmware update for the phone has only just added sending messges to multiple contacts…so you can see how far behind it is !

The only good side is that I dont have to carry around my iPod and a phone…and it looks good ! i’m seriously thinking of getting an LG Viewty or someother touchscreen phone, just because the phone side of the iPhone lets it down

Yeah would be more inclined to buy one if it had flash on it too. But apple say full version of flash is too much and mobile flash is not worth having. Very goldilocks of them. Silverlight might end up on it before flash.

No java on it either as Apple seems not to have wanted it even though Sun were keen. Now Sun are trying to put java on it via the sdk anyway but may run into issues regarding the terms of use of the sdk. Mind you I probably wouldn’t code for it in java even though it is the language I am most comfortable with, but would have solved the lack of apps instantly were it there.

Still the specs suggest a powerful device so shouldn’t be running into heap issues all the time like some other phones so I am still interested. Plan on using the sdk emulation to develop and then decide if worth picking one up ( I don’t like phone contracts as I never talk for as long as I type :)).
Still need to look into objective C.

A Lego game/app has been released for the iPhone, it looks excellent

      http://www.uberphones.com/2008/03/apple/iphone_lego_touch_app_build_submit_share/

I’m sure there’s going to be some great concepts created with this SDK

The Irish cost plans are very poor compared to the UK ones, avoid unless you are a really sad, vain person (=aka mac user…JOKE)

Don’t forget the cost issue too, you’re looking at €400 for the 8GB model plus at least €45 per month for a mediocre plan whose only advantage once you take the bundled calls and text into consideration is the 1GB free traffic each month.[/quote:28822672ec]

Hey, at least that traffic will last a while due to the lack of 3G support[/quote:28822672ec]

I had a talk with one of friends recently about this and yeah it is just not worth having at all at the moment! 3rd or 4th generation iPhone might make me want one…but the lack of features list is far too big for my liking!

(had to quote the 3g support comment because it truely made my day)

      1. Has anyone here got an iPhone?

      Yes.

      2. Is it any good?

Yes. Understanding that it’s a mobile computer with good graphics, a big screen, accelerometer, location aware…

…that can’t do MMS, record video or Cut/Paste.

      3. Is there any current games for it?

The Jailbreak market has been very productive. This week, there will be DOZENS of games for it.

      4. Are they any good?

Yeah, a lot of them rely on the accelerometer for movement due to the lack of physical buttons though you can tap on the screen in multiple places at the same time which works. You do lose something in the feedback though.

      5. Have you tried writing your own for it?

God no. But I am trying to find people interested in writing games for it.

Remember, this week the App Store opens. And the 3G+GPS version of the phone is released.

I watched the Apple Conference video, (talk about some over-the-top marketing hype), and steve jobs addressed all the initial issues with the iPhone 1.0, and then introduced the iPhone v2.0.

Apparently, it will ship with 3G, GPS, and MS Exchange support.

He also demo’d the Super Monkey Ball (via Sega) running on the iPhone.

and the last thing he said was that it will retail, worldwide for $299 U.S. no matter what. He reckons he is strong-arming all the vendors that this is the de-facto price.

Hope this is the case when it is released within a week.

And I would imagine that Nokia and Sony will have to half (if not quarter!) the price of their high end phone, or see a serious dip in their share prices.

All the info and demo’s are here:

Concerning point 4… It all looks nice and bright but… I’ve learnt not to rejoice too quickly in a few years of mobile games development.

Remember XBLA at the beginning was taking 30%, when they had very few content, just like Apple Store. And recently, now they don’t need a lot of indie games since most big publishers are on this channel, they have almost halved the royalty. Who knows if Apple won’t do the same.

Another worry I have is OK, anyone who paid 99$ for code signing can go and drop their games. But I’m realistic and who will grab the spot in the shop ? EA with Spore, Sega with Monkey Ball and so on… and certainly not the small indie developer. I already had two proposals from publishers to send them our future iPhone games, which means that here you will half your revenue. From 70%, you fall to 35%… I think lots of small developers will be desillusioned (?) of this new channel. All the big and middle size publishers and developers want to get into this channel. I see hardly any space for small or indie developers.

Enough ranting, there are some very good aspects you mentionned with the iPhone, and it will make a change in the world of mobile gaming, hopefully…

      Hi Bomberman,
I don’t believe the cut will increase – but would be prepared to eat my hat if it does happen. So – that’s not a valid concern in my book though I can see how it might be for some.

As for your second concern – I don’t understand that opinion at all – can you explain that a little more?

Any indie developer is competing with the big studios on every platform and not just the iPhone but does that mean taking your ball and going home? Of course not. If you think you have nothing to offer to beat Spore or Monkey Ball then why would you develop for any platform? Making a game for the PC? You’ve got competitors. Where are indie developers creating for in this case?

I don’t see the need, per se, for publishers as much – and not sure why you would send your iPhone games to them – and moreso – why would you send it to two competing publishers which are just going to placing n the same channel?

The store works well for independent developers where you will live or die based on your reputation. Does the game look well, is there actual gameplay, is it crash-happy, does it represent a one shot or is it a product that people will come back to again and again? These are the things that will resonate with consumers.

I might have the wrong end of the stick here and I am interested in your opinion here.

Is there a difference between "Cell-Tower Triangulation" and GPS or is this a marketing misnomer?

I was under the impression that the iPhone supported GPS. Any one able to confirm or deny?

"AGPS devices use traditional GPS receivers, but help speed up location acquisition and accuracy by using cellphone towers to triangulate".
iPhone 3G = AGPS, but can also use WIFI as locator.

"Location-aware smartphone — not a dedicated GPS device." 3rd party software on the way though to give car gps like functions. While it only takes the iphone a few seconds to get location that may be an issue when driving fast?

I’ve had an Iphone for a while now and i really like it, there are some weak points as mentioned earlier like the camera and bluetooth but I’d still recommend buying one. Just not with a contract. Too pricey.

There are loads of games\software available for it through installer with most just asking for some sort of donation.

Also i really like the way itunes syncs up with my music/podcasts etc.

As for getting one of the other touch screen phones, we’ve been porting one of our games to one of these phones and i cant say that i’m impressed with the responsiveness of the touch screen at all. Seemed really poor compared to the iphone. But each to their own.

The WiFi location service is based on SkyHook wireless. Will King, guy behind opengeo.net was at BOCC telling us all about it.

My other half tried to ditch the 1st gen iPhone and move to a HTC Touch Diamond last week and lasted less than a weekend. The touchscreens on a lot of other devices, like the Diamond, are not as responsive (the iPhone screen uses capacitance not resistance which is why the iphone works witha finger and not with a stylus or fingernail)

That said, as was featured in EDGE this week, using fingers to control intricate games is hard – like trying to play a PSP with mittens on.

The Super Monkey Ball and Moto Racer ports are great though. There’s a lot of very smooth OpenGL renders going on in there. It may not be the JesusPhone for you – but it should raise the bar out there.

Hopefully they have left modders room to allow for uploading of custom ROMs as well, similar to the C64 device.
