aka….shameless plug for my latest 3D rendering….. ;)
This AT-ST model was on the backburner for a long while, but finally got around to finishing the modeling and texturing tonight. Just want to know what my fellow gd.ie members opinions are……..I was looking for a good pine forest photo which I could composite the model into, but can’t find any good ones…..

I dunno think you could have done a better job. The legs look a bit off and dont get me started on the front guns. All and all i personally think it is a disgrace and you should be drowned in a river of your own bile. I mean how could you possibly think that model is good? It makes me sick just thinking about it. I wish you were dead. dead dead dead.
Ah only joking it looks class. Wish i could do that.

Shame on you Sideshow. Jealousy will get you nowhere.
By the way Dave, thats a Savage model. Well done. really like the textures. spot on.*Omegas hears Geroge Lucas knocking*

Beautiful work Dave.
Perhaps you could post some of your texture maps, and talk us through your texturing approach (bitmaps vs procedural).
I for one certainly get confused when texturing complex maps like this. Is it all one UV Unwrapped map?
Lewis
PS You rock.

Fecking class modelling, and excellent texturing etc.
When the number of 3D artists on the forum reaches a critical mass, it would be great to see a montage of their work, linked from the main site.

Very nice work Noo, and well rendered, sis you use Lighttracer or a GI solution?
-
05/11/2004 at 2:36 pm #15492AnonymousInactive
That’s really really good. the texturing’s excellent on it. At first glance I thought it was a photo of one of lucasarts actual models (not a 3d one but a miniture i mean)
-
05/11/2004 at 2:55 pm #15493AnonymousInactive
Thanks for the comments guys. :)
Lewis,
For the main pieces that I wanted to add extra texture detail(head, rear of head, feet) I unwrapped the UVs and then rendered the texture, painted on it in photoshop and re-applied it. I have attached the texture for the main cockpit part below as an example. For the smaller parts and parts where I didn’t need to add too much extra detail I simply applied one of 3 generic textures I created:
1. Dirtied Metal
2. Dirtied & Sooted Metal
3. Dirtied & Muddy Metal.Pete,
I used GI, however I then changed the levels of the renders in photoshop to get a higher contrasted look to the final images.I hope to animate it soon, when I get some more free time. :)

Damnit. Even his dirt is well executed.
So essentially, your’re talking about six seperate maps (three generic, and three specific?)?
How many polys are we looking at? How many seperate objects? Max or Maya? Poly or mesh?
What does GI solution mean (lighting isn’t my strong point!)?
I’m sure you could make a few quid selling this model on one of the many 3d community sites. Have you thought about that?
Lewis.
PS How can I book a personal tuition session with No-optical Training Solutions?
Alternatively, can I buy one of your DVDs? ;)
-
05/11/2004 at 3:10 pm #15497AnonymousInactive
Lewis I will do up a quick tutorial. But basically your correct, there are 3 generic dirty metal textures which are applied to various parts of the model. Then for the larger, more detailed parts I unwrapped the texture and painted custom dirt onto them.
I will post a link to the tutorial in this thread later……. -
05/11/2004 at 3:21 pm #15498AnonymousInactive
I’ll certainly look forward to that. Based on what I’ve seen you produce in our mutual project. You seem to work extremely fast, and to an exceptional standard.

heheh…….
I was actually listening to the commentary on the Episode II DVD yesterday while texturing the falcon and it is unbelievable the amount of digital “tinkering” they did with this movie. You know the part where Anakin kisses Padme for the first time, the way he touches her hand, then her back, then kisses her. Originally he only touched her back, but during PP Lucas thought it would be better if he touched her hand first. So ILM digitally added a fecking hand touching hers……..I mean……..overkill?
He also had them paint out the flies that were flying around in the waterfall scene…..Just goes to show the world of differance between Lucas and say, Scorcese……

Sweet, very sweet. You could nearly just apply the ‘AT-ST’ textures to it and be done. I like it alot. Oh and about my Super Stardestroyer I imagine the fact that HL 2 has suddenly landed will prohibit the development of that even further eh?, ah well. Think I might try my hand at it myself.
-
16/11/2004 at 9:54 pm #15762AnonymousInactive
I’m holding off Half Life 2 until I get the new pc(if I get it now I will only play it), which should be around two weeks time, it should be worth the wait though:
P4 3.2 GHz
1 GB DDR2 Ram
160 GB HDD
Radeon X500(PCI Express)
19″ Flat Panel monitorI’ve waited this long for Half Life, another two weeks is not much, especially when I can play it with the graphical settings on high….oh yeah!!
I’m doing new textures for the bike, the AT-ST is gray, this is brown and black… ;)Sure give modeling the Star Destroyer a go…….you might as well!

Is that the Alienware you were looking at last year Noop?, oh and I started the X-wing… might post something tomorrow. Oh and another thing to anyone who has bought HL2, don’t you find the ‘Steam’ registration a bit much? I pity anyone who doesn’t have a Internet connection. Hope my trusty Laptop will run the bugger, well if she can handle Doom I should be alright but I iamgine your setup will be lethal Nooptical. nice one.:p
*edit*
quick question Nooptical, how did you do the seat on the rider?, is it an extrusion of a spline or just an edited Poly?
Another question, do you start all your models form a plane usinf cuts and the like? or is it box modeling?
cheers.

Yeah, can’t say I agree with the whole steam registration thing. My friend got Half Life today and said he had to first download a patch to check the game is genuine, then create the steam account and register his cd key, then it unlocks the games files. Bit much really. But still, its Half Life 2, its worth it(he said the game is freakin amazing by the way, the most realistic game he has ever played!)
The seat is modeling using spline modeling(creating the cage, applying surface modifier) to create the basic model and then converted to editable poly to add the bumps(center is extruded inwards and then all the bumps extruded outwards) and a nurms meshsmooth applied with 2 iterations.
Differant techniques are used for the differant parts of the model. Spline modeling, box modeling, basic primitives, lofting, lathing. They are all used depending on what is the best technique to get the desired geometry! But no one technique is used for the entire model.
-
16/11/2004 at 11:33 pm #15766AnonymousInactive
Cheers for that Nooptical, I have an aweful habit of just using one technique per model, ie: Box/spline/plane. never incorperate all of them, but now I will try.
Still trying to get onto Steam, keep getting booted by a ‘Valve peer’ which is a bit worrying, sounds like it’s a dilberate boot from the server. If the situation doesn’t improve I will be E-mailing a formal complaint to Doug Lombard, this is all a bit much… :(
-
17/11/2004 at 12:21 am #15768AnonymousInactive
Yep, apparently people are having problems logging into Steam. I have a feeling Valve are going to get a lot of flak for this whole fiasco……rightly so in my opinion. You go out and pay a lot of money for a game, bring it home and you can’t play the bloody thing! Bad move Valve.
You might be better off waiting until tomorrow morning when all the yanks are in bed. The servers might be less full then….

I just checked ‘steams’ server strenght awhile ago, it was 234.000 over its capacity, thats madness, and whats worse is Valve only launched one server?. what the heel is with that?. I agree that they well get slack over this, and they should. If their that paranoid about people pirating their games then maybe they should consider making sweets for a living instead!
-
17/11/2004 at 9:35 am #15772AnonymousInactive
??
EVERYONE is that paranoid about losing money to pirated game. Its just no one has found a way to stop. Valve are the first ones to actually to do something about it. True, they should have more servers running at their end, but if it works, I can see everyone following suit. -
17/11/2004 at 1:24 pm #15776AnonymousInactive
Its not working. Apparently there are already cracked versions of the game available to download.
In my opinion all Valve did was piss people off. No matter what you do to try and prevent cracking, talented coders and crackers will find a way to beat it.Valve could have thought of another way to try and limit piracy without forcing people to register with steam and activate their CD key. The game is gonna be cracked anyway, why force legitimate fans into all this crap.
Anyway, back to texturing the bike…….later
-
17/11/2004 at 1:56 pm #15783AnonymousInactive
i agree with Nooptical, it was going to be cracked away, so the real pirates will be selling copies down at the markets while average joe who bought the game has to go to all this hassle, + what about the guy who does not have a internet connection?? i live in the halls in jordanstown and i have no internet connection! so is the only way i can play HF 2 is to get a cracked copy!!!
(well i need to get a decent graphic card too but thats not the point! )
+ i like to borrow games from friends and to lend games to friends, guess i can’t with HL 2
in the end it the small guy, value customers that will suffer!
still i understand why they did it but i think i might backfire

Its the same as online music downloading…something needs to be done, but no-one knows what. These things do need to be tried though otherwise a solution is never going to be found.
-
17/11/2004 at 3:19 pm #15790AnonymousInactive
Piracy is everywhere, not just games. As you said Omen it’s in music too and Cinema, and making people go through what I had too last night is a right pan in the arse. 5 hours is how long it took me. Here’s a run over of what i had too do:
Install the game- 15 mins
install steam- 30 mins
update steam- 1hr
install patches- 30 mins
register steam- 2hr(due to server capacity)
update drivers- 30mins
unlock HL 2 levels-1hr
complete registration- 30 mins
restart computerLog into steam load HL2- 10 mins(atleast thats if you are allowed)
start new game and wait for opening to load-10 mins -
17/11/2004 at 3:19 pm #15791AnonymousInactive

And not only that but because the game is designed with an ATI card in mind, I get glithces in the gameplay, like animation and voice skips every now and then. I updated my drivers the other day but it still is glitchy.

I’m sure you would have glitches in Doom if you have an Nvidia. Having neither games I can only speculate, but trying to find all bugs for every single different graphics card and fix them so it doesn’t break on a different is something I never want to have to work on. The only way to test it is to test with every single card, cos they all have their own little differences. And for a game that relies on its graphics so intensely, come on, give ’em a break! -
17/11/2004 at 5:53 pm #15800AnonymousInactive
Omen if you played HL 2 on my PC you would inderstand my situation, infact it has crashed a few times also due to My N-Vidia card being onborad instead of an ATI one. Regardless Ian Hannigan said it right “ultimately the game IS worth it”.

Seeing as there are going to be X-Wings in episode 3 I thought I might explore what diffferent designs could be done, will do some more work on it tommorrow and maybe, just maybe tackle texturiong it. Hope it makes Nooptical’s work look even better. LOL:p

Omen if you played HL 2 on my PC you would inderstand my situation, infact it has crashed a few times also due to My N-Vidia card being onborad instead of an ATI one.[/quote:48a5833259]
If you’ve ever tried to debug specific graphic card bugs, you’d understand my point :) And if you have on-board chip rather than a stand-alone card, well that makes even more sense. Those aren’t standard congifurations and its pretty certain the game was never tested with such a setup.ps, if we’re continuing on this, I’d suggest creating a new thread…

Ronnys’ AT-AT thread reminded me of my At-St and the fact that I hadn’t finished it(rigged etc). So I worked on it yesterday to finish it off.
I have fully rigged it(using HI rig) and also did a quick animation of it walking, which you can download below.
Let me know what you think…. :)http://home.ripway.com/2005-4/283370/atst_walk_sml.exe
There is a really shite daily transfer limit on this free hosting site, so its basically the first 3 people who will be able to download it…..
Should be getting a proper hosting solution for my website soon though…If anyone can’t download it, but would like to see it, let me know and I will email it to you(2.5 megs).

Ok, here are the movies. Finally have a good host(Cheers Ronan!), so no-one should have any problems downloading them.
Walk Cycle Cam 1 (2.5megs)
Walk Cycle Cam 2 (0.5megs)
Walk Cycle Cam 3 (0.6megs)The 3rd camera view seems to have a bit of a jerk to it for some reason, not sure why. Probably something dodgy going on with the camera animation keys. Anyway, they are in Bink Video format, hope you enjoy.
PS: I have also added updated renders of the AT-ST to replace the ones that were up on my site. The only real change is the fact that I have the shutter window thingies on the cockpit opened…..which looks better.
