Yes… thank you for that information. Would you still say it though if it’s name was Eddy 6? ;)Seriously though, I’m still learning the two most popular tools so could you please tell us why you prefer Maya to 3DS Max? In your opinion what makes it the tool to use?

InactiveI’ll be sure to check out the site to see what additions come with Maya 6… not that I’ll be able to splash out for it. [/quote:8d33906810]
Alias are releasing an updated Personal Learning Edition, with the features of 6 included to the best of my knowledge. The usual restrictions apply (watermarked renders, output size etc.) but you can load and save and it is fully functional. PLE is free so you won’t have to splash out at all!

Hush, an aspiring developer is in need of the elder’s wisdom so I’m sure we’re all civilised enough to have a debate and share our opinions on a matter without it turning into all out warfare….. we are right? ;) -

InactiveI have had the learning version for quite some time now.
Ive looked into it a bit, but im still slugging away at 3D studio Max.You can get a full copy with nearly every release of 3d World Magazine. i got a copy about 3 months ago, they keep giving it away for free on nearly every cd, so keep an eye out!
Still prefer 3ds at the moment though..
Been using Max 6 recently and im impressed with the havok stuff.. Alot of fun I tell ya! Real-time physics is great craic! Ragdoll…ummm

InactiveDoes anyone have any idea of the number or figures or even percentages of what dev co’s use what 3D tools? I know that Max used to be the cheapest and therefore most commonly used. But Alias Wavefront had started makin Maya more competitively priced.
How ready are companies ready to teach say a Maya Artist 3D Max tools or would they just pass them by regardless of quality. I know with EA it doesn’t matter what you use because they have software that accepts both into their engines. Its just I find over all that time spent learnin one tool is less time learnin the other.

InactiveTHe Havok Plugin is not as good as the one for Max, now this is either because of:
A) Max is still perceived by the Havok lads as numero 1 software for games companies, therefore Maya will always play second fiddle :p
or
B) Alias didn’t give enough help to Havok inorder to get it sheet hot.
or
C) I dunnoI go with B.

Very difficult to say what the situation is regarding number of seats, as every company tells a different story, and it is also very dependent on location. In the UK it my guess is
MAX/Maya/other 40/30/30

Max is now amongst the most expensive, but retains its position due to the large pool of existing users. Some friends of mine set up a company last year and made the decision to go with Max because it was easier to recruit.

Quality is always vital, and many places have a variety of software which is used. However deadlines tend to be tight and retraining time is not seen as productive. Be sure that whatever software you choose, that you can get professional results within a professional timeframe, and you should be able to find work! -

Where I work, it looks like we are shifting to be 100% Maya over time- yay!
Maya is meant to be more intuitive, I love the littlle hotbox that pops up when you hold down the space bar. Bare in mind I haven’t used 3DSMax much.
