this Xbox vs ps3 review A Game Developer’s Perspective, got 2176 diggs

      i made the first comment

I’m not a sony PS fanboy (far from it), but i really doubt that was written by a “game developer”, it just too bias to wards the xbox 360.

From what i have read, and heard from game developers, after you weight up the pro’s and con’s, power wise , they are are about the same.[/quote:9f0c8fae73]

      i got -86 diggs :)

a much better technical review can be found here a great read, if a little over my head ;) (btw this got something like 850 diggs, i guess too many words for the average digg user)

I would think one of the most important differences between the two consoles is the ease of development.
I could be talking out my arse here, but from my understanding the Xbox 360 uses a framework that is familiar to most developers, whereas the PS3 could be a bit more of a mystery.

Could be the usual story of whoever is familiar with the PS3 architecture will manage to get great results from it, but that quite a few developers will have headaches trying to achieve results similar to 2nd generation Xbox games.

that is true, 360 is like developing for pc as xdk and visual studios etc all play nicely together, all being ms of course.

PS3 is a little more awkward to get up and running but its not too bad. I will say that the debug isnt as good as visual studio debugger, but fuck we cant have it all eh? 8)

It’s too early to decide which is the better. Has anyone on the boards actually seen a PS3 running?

Yes! Im looking at mine right now running a game in development.
I’ve been developing for both for over a year now. Both are similar, but easier to harness the power of the 360.

Im sure ivan has also seen a ps3 running once or twice at this stage :P

in fact just after my previous post, i went over to the corner of the room and one the lads had motorstorm, resistance and ridge racer running on the ps3.
motorstorm looks pretty sweet, although your car blows up alot, with the smallest bang. makes for nice eye candy though

As far as just an end user gaming point of view, I don’t think I want a ps3 until Metal Gear 4 comes out. Which will prob be next summer-ish. And with the whole online thing, or distinct lack of any sort of organisation on sony’s part with it, the 360 looks more and more inviting every few weeks.

Plus I’ve never owned the original xbox, so xbox live is this incredibly inticing thing that I think i want to be a part of now. Seems just really really cool. And with most upcoming games going multi-platform now, such as : Assassins Creed, Guitar Hero, GTA 4, Fatal Inertia etc I think there will be no need to get a ps3 because i’m sure they will look and play amazingly well on the 360.
Throw in exclusive games like gears of war, halo 3 and viva pinata amongst others, and I think I’ve finally made up my mind!!!!

Never thought i’d say it but i’ll buy a 360 in January I think.

Is it just me or does anyone think the Wii is really really poor and disappointing?

Xbox live would be great only for the people who insist on shouting nonsensical crap down the mic….

As I’ve neither worked on the PS3 or Xbox 360 I can only guess that one reason why the 360 architecture is so much easier to utilise is that it’s so akin to developing for PC(albeit with more cores). The PS3 on the other hand is pretty new territory. But again this is only an observers opinion on the issue, so feel free to blow it out of the water.

      I disagree.
The most important things are price and accessories. PS3 is way too expensive for every house to have one at the moment, the user-base is going to take a long time to fill, and in that time a lot of people will have gone for the cheaper option of the 360 because it has already gone through 6 (?) iterations of the Live format and it seems to be pretty solid and everyone likes the way it works. Haven’t seen PS3 Live yet, but I’ve heard its not as user-friendly. 360 also has a lot of games out already, so if you were buying, would you buy the one with 5 games or 50? Okay, so they may all be rubbish, but thats another point.

If games are signed up, its up to developers to make them for the specified platform, may be harder for them to do a certain platform, but it will get done one way or another.

On a very different point i just really like the playstation control pad to the xbox. Far too many buttons on the xbox even though not many more then the playstation but just the layout of the xbox controller annoys me. And yes ive owned most consoles that have cum out in the past few years. Im still trying to figure out which i will buy xbox 360 for xmas or ps3 when its out in march.
Oh the decisons we have to make lol

I thought they had the same amount of buttons, no?
I’ve not actually played with a PS3 though.

Last I heard the PS3 was a bit naff… and the sixaxis stuff being a bit crap, according to eurogamer i think it was.

Aye, I’m pretty sure they have the same amount(not including the 360’s wireless sync button). But in saying that I’m not overly keen on the xbox controller. I think I would of preferred the left and right butt buttons to be slightly lower down.

I know the thing is the more and more i play the new xbox controller im getting a feel for it but at the moment its limited as im never able to get to my mates to play it. But the ps contoller is soo easy to use and suits so many games that i like and the ps3 is identical. But im now getting broadband into the house i just moved into and want to experience xbox live whereas the new ps live will take a year to get up to standards so its looking more and more like an xbox 360 from santa. Dam that gears of war and its persuaive advertising lol

      It’s just you

On a more serious note, and this is pointed at developers in particular (inasmuch as any GD.ie posters have worked on it yet), how easy has it proven to be developing for the Wii so far?

I’m getting conflicting POVs from a middleware developer on the one side (it’s easy) and a game developer on the other (it’s not) :?

Oh, yeah… IMHO, the definitive controller:

Nope. Yours is an X-Arcade (with PC-USB/GC/XB/PS/DC/etc. adapters, by Xgamers), mine’s a HotRod SE (PS/2 plug only, see http://hotrod.mameworld.net/).

I’d also take yours off you though, if it’s ever going  (the HotRod is for a modular cab project I’m finally embarking upon

In the “Address” bar of your browser, type in “http://www.google.com” and click on the ‘go’ button, then type in the middle of the page “Xarcade” or “Hotrod SE” or “Hanaho” and click the ‘search’ button

XB360 vs PS3? Used to be, when new hardware was coming out, how true-to-the-arcade the games would be…

I know nowadays the industry is a bit like boy racers all about the flashiness of the car not quite caring about each individual part that makes up a great car. In our case its the quality of the games the industry should be working on not churning out consoles.

The games are quite gimmicky at the moment but that is because they are all launch titles and Nintendo just really want to show off what’s different with the console and getting people interested! Saying that alot of them do look fun!!!

Which reminds me, we get the shipment of Wiis in the shop today…..not gonna be able to work knowing mine is just there!!!

Well having had mine since the 24th, all I can say is that I’m grinning from ear to ear. Got me Zelda and Trauma Center.

Zelda is huge (I’m 20 hours in and its still going, still feels like I’m at the start of the game, but never has that crazy final fantasy too big feeling. It’s really good overall, the story is probably the strongest yet in the series and I’m not sure who didn’t like the graphics but when it looks this good its almost feels like nit picking wanting it looking better. Sure theres some camera issues and a fee iffy parts here and there, but definitely recommended for anyone who ever liked a Zelda game before.

Trauma Center is really good too, gets very intense from the get go, I wince every time I pull a glass shard out the wrong way. The story is crazy intense too, super over the top the way anime does it best. But its cool using your 2 hands, like very much are totally in control. Does give you too many options at times, causing you to be unsure which tool to use next, but overall its great.

Wii Sports is completely the other end of the spectrum, out of the 3 its the only one thats really good to show off to others, and let them play, without having to tell them they need to put x amount of hours in before they fully understand it. Its hilarious in multiplayer too. And again I was surprised how nice the graphics are in it too, nice effects in wii boxing. Who needs normal mapping when you got character.

All in all I’m really excited to see all sorts of new games coming onto the system. I can really see the same sort of DS time line with the Wii. Games out now just showing whats it capable of and testing the waters, and this time next year we’ll have some remarkable titles that we never could have imagined way back when we first saw this Wii remote thingy…

Welcome to Zelda :) Wind Waker was 50 odd hours if I remember correctly.
I’ve got Friday off…Play better deliver!!

I dunno, with Wind Waker it felt like there was alot of unnecessary broken filler, like the figurines – which was annoying that you had to wait 24 hours til they were ready, which just translated into playing you’re wind waker to skip ahead 12 hours twice everytime you wanted some figures made; and the boating everywhere for treasure – which again was good and fun until you either got rupees or more heart pieces both of which were not needed as the only time I died was at the end and I had nothing left to buy in the game.

Twilight Princess feels like the core story is very long and many hours spent point a-b ing, without the exploration side parts.

      more bad news
      http://wii-news.dcemu.co.uk/rumors-on-uk-shortages-45094.html

There have been rumblings about possible Wii shortages for the European launch for some time, but now they’re growing louder, thanks to a few chatty GAME employees. GAME is a large video game (ya rly) retailer in the UK. Employees are whispering that, while a hardware shortage is expected, the UK may also see a shortage in games and accessories for the new Nintendo console as well — Zelda is mentioned at the heart of the game shortages. Oh no!

Word is that the stores are putting the banhammer down on software-only purchases at launch. Apparently GAME stores are only selling software and accessories to those who are purchasing a console. That seems like a very strange way to do business to us, but hey, launches make people crazy. It’s also rumored that GAME stores are canceling game preorders, so good luck getting the titles you want.

Our contacts across the pond are few — can anyone confirm any of these rumors, or are they just so much noise?[/quote:4f2e6217d7]
