KeymasterMight as well start another thread about this, as the other one seems to take fecking ages to load every time.
Shall we start to make plans for the September GameDevelopers.ie bi-monthly shindig? I know a lot of people like to know these things in advance especially if you’re coming from outside of Dublin, so we’ll get the discussion going about dates and venue.

InactiveAnother shindig sounds like a good idea, still plenty of faces to see yet. Unfortunately thursday is a tad awkward since it means taking friday off work for those outside dublin (170 miles outside). Clearly I’m talking about myself and others at torc. A date on a friday would rock though, if thats at all possible.

KeymasterI think we will have to alternate last thurs and last friday of the months so we can get most people to come…unless a Sat. night is a compromise?

InactiveI’d love to show up either day…
Speaking from experience though, holding a midweek get-together tends towards a very Dublin-centric event, and if it is meant to encompass all areas of Ireland, it would be better to run it on a weekend date. This generally means people dont have work the next day, and hence people are around for longer, are more prepared to let their hair down etc.

InactiveSaturday is not really good for us conuntry folk (well, me anyway).
At least a weeknight (even Friday) can be combined with some business in the big smoke.
Saturday means a spcific trip and breaks up a precious weekend (i.e. one where we’re not in the office bug-fixing – you all know what I mean ;) )
The alternating idea sounds good.
I’d be happy with either the last Thursday or Friday of Sept. but would have a preference for the Thursday.

KeymasterI think the last Friday of September (26th) seems to be winning it at this stage.. So is Toners a good place to meet or should we consider elsewhere..?

KeymasterToners sounds good to me, might as well keep them in the same place so people know where it is, and it’s a nice enough venue anyway.

KeymasterFor those who will be attending the next shindig can you put your thinking caps on in advance of the evening – mightn’t be possible once we start into the Guinness – cause I am looking for suggestions for games industry/business guest speakers from abroad.
I am talking to EI about possibly jointly organising a couple of workshops and I would like input from you as to who might be most useful to invite to Ireland to speak.
One useful suggestion is Ernest Adams and apparently he is in the UK now…you may have seen his features on gamasutra..
They could be business, publishing, technical, academic people …just well established and experienced..
any others…??Aphra.

InactiveA real coup for you to pull off would be if you could convince Dave Perry to speak. He was to visit his family in Northern Ireland sometime. He could do it then. But Earnest Adams would certainly suffice if you could’nt get the big guy to come. :D

KeymasterBoth EA and Sony have developers across to meet the media from time to time to talk about games from their stables, ie Jason Reubin from Naughty Dog last year for Ratchet & Clank.
If any of these come up I could see if they would be available for something.

InactiveI would love to meet all you guys and discuss game design in greater depth among other things. Sadly at seventeen I feel like I wouldnt really fit into the group. Not to mention the fact that its like 100 miles away. I think that if you have any sensible discussions regarding design you should post the basics of what you said on the forum. Therefore they could be discussed further. I dont know, its just an idea. What are all your thoughts on it?

KeymasterMcI, it’s a free for all, everyone’s welcome!
Fitch, they usually go on well into the wee hours past public transport time.
Ronny, although I’m sure no-one condones under-age drinking, if you can make it and have appropriate identification you should be fine, after all by the time you do legally drink it’ll probably be 21’s anyway and you’ll only be allowed have one and a half shandy’s before being sent home the way things are going :)

Inactive> I think that if you have any sensible discussions regarding design you should post the basics of what you said on the forum.
Having attended these a few times, I’d say that there won’t be too many sensible discussions after the first half hour by any of the attendees due to the consumption of copious amounts of party juice :)
The meetings are great just to meet up with fellow Irish game developers. They are very relaxed and friendly, well worth attending if you can.
If there are any areas far from Dublin ( eg Northern Ireland ) where there is enough interest in meeting up at a time that doesn’t overlap with the main meetings, I’m sure something could be organised in a central bar up here.

Keymasterwell in my usual organised way just rang Toners to reserve our tables and someone has gone and booked downstairs for a party..all of it…and only half an hour before me…
So should we move to another pub that night or change the date??
Apparently Fridays are usually ok there and from now he is willing (Paul the manager) to book us in once a month..
Sorry people…my organisational skills are slipping..

InactiveChange the venue! Change the venue! It can be difficult enough for some of us who have to travel from the North etc. to get to Dublin after work in time on a particular day and those of us at Torc who are going are OK for Friday. Cheers.

Keymastermakes sense to me…I am in favour of keeping the night.
I know the Pembroke bar is near Toners but that may be a bit packed on Friday nights…anyone know a pub that doesn’t get too packed and doesn’t pump out music so loud we can’t talk….

KeymasterThanks Bombrman for the suggestions but I have just been around the area and found Maguire’s Pub..and they have a mid sized snug and they will let us have it on Friday evening…
and if you are there around 7.30 they serve platters of food..they were willing to do us one but I didn’t know how many would turn up at that time!
Anyway, walk past Toners and cross the street where Tescos is..about 500 metres down on the left past Hacketts Reprographics is Maguires..it looks like a normal Georgian House rather than a pub but is pretty nice inside…
phew..a decision…
see you all sometime after 7pm…
I’ll be the female in the group!

(What do you mean I’ll recognise the bunch of reprobate game developers on sight – aren’t we all just normal people? Just like everyone else?)
I’ll be there around 7.30 hopefully.

Keymasterwell you have been a quiet lot while I was away….I though this would be buzzing after the great turn out in Maguire’s but you all obviously chatted enough in the pub!!
anyway thanks for all turning out, being on time and staying…nice to see some of the rumours in parts of the forums are true – you know what I am referring to.. and that new people are coming out of the woodwork all the time..
I think we will have to have another one at the end of Oct..maybe the 31st which is a Friday…

InactiveIt’s kinda hard to summarise what events occurred at the shindig…basically a group of like minded folks got together and drank beer and talked about games design, games playing, Irish gaming, Irish game design etc until late in the evening, when we all went home wondering why we didnt do this more often.
