Anyone ever been on it? I’ve graduated now and have been looking for any kind of job (industry and non) for about six weeks now…nuthin. Is it easy to get approved if you’re genuine? How long does it take after that for payments to start? Do you need to show a passport? I think I’ve lost mine…(yeah…bad luck lately).

Probably best to ask the citizen information board or the likes. Local dole office a good start also i guess.

Yup I was on it for a few months after leaving college like yourself, thankfully not since. Its handy enough, proof of address, ID etc. If you’re living at home with your folks I think its means tested, but if you’re paying rent/married/with kids you get an extra allowance. I think there is something in there about PRSI aswell, depending on your contributions, I forget now TBH but you’ll find what you need on

You also have to register with FAS, good luck

Yup, just go in, if you’ve had jobs in the past you get money easy peasy.
You go talk to a FAS person, you tell them you’re looking for a games job and they won’t be able to help you, they’ll fess up and agree with you, wish oyu good luck, sign a piece of paper, bob’s your uncle. Should start getting some money after a month or two, the amount will depend on hox much tax you’ve ever paid.

I have a few friends on it. Apparently it’s easier to play than Tetris. It’s a good way to pay the bills while you look for a job.

About that.. how’s the job-hunt going? I’m going into my last year at university and have been looking at a lot of graduate programmes in IT firms like Google and Microsoft, as well as jobs in the games industry. There should be a lot of books and information in your university careers service on how to get a job and what exactly you need to do. The best plan of action would be to do a lot of research and go in all-guns-blazing. And voila – you’ll have a job in no time!

Have you been applying for graduate programmes? Most firms hiring (in the UK/Ire) are based in London and Dublin. Not sure where you live but moving may be likely. I’m all to eager to get away from Belfast. God bless the Celtic Tiger because hopefully it will lead me to greener pastures next year.

If you’re looking for a coding job and want to move to the UK, send me a CV…we’re hiring.

The dole is not a good place to go IMO. Better getting a job of any kind untill you get what you are looking for.

Yeah, I have been trying for all kinds of jobs. I just haven’t been getting any. And unfortunately I do know XSI…and I applied for Brown Bag, I heard nothing back. I heard a lot of ex-Boulder people got the jobs.

If you know XSi you should try Screen Scene, you should make it known that you’re available for freelance work – you’d have a much better chance of picking some commercials work

Out of curiousity S’n’S, where have previous graduates of your course gone to?

Out of my course or year? Out of the course in general…people don’t seem to go very far distance wise…they just go to Flash studios in dublin. This year…I haven’t heard of a single one of us employed yet. I know myself I seriously have to up my game if I wanna get a job in games in England, but I reckoned I could get a junior position somewhere here in the meantime; there’s just a general lack of jobs. Boulder going at the specific time it did really buggered graduates, because now far more experience animators got ahead of us and took all the jobs…

How do they let you know if you’ve been approved for the dole? And how exactly do they pay you? I supplied them with all my documents, now its just a waiting game…

As long as I remember they inform you by letter, can take a while…. And ya they pay into your account if you provided the details, otherwise you have to go in to collect. If you worked for a few years, even part time, they wont ask you to come in and sign till the second month. After that not sure, only was on it for 3 months. Longer you leave it the more interviews and proof you will need.

It’s in thank christ. Now I can focus on my reel and getting a job.

Can you pick it up from any post office or just the one nearest your registered address?

When I did it, it went straight to my bank account, but I had to give them my account details. So no idea about post office collection, perhaps you designate to them which you want to collect from? Or they have one in each area?

I’ll give em my details when I go back in then. Thanks all. :)

Most of my friends are on it. As far as I know you either have to be unemployed for six months or get fired from a job to get it.
They pay it into your bank account, but I think you have to go into the office to sign in once a month.[/quote:43279f296a]

      Wrong, wrong and wrong. :)

You can get it after a few weeks of looking for a job (which proof saying as much). They then do not put it into your bank account until you’ve been on it 6 months. And you have to sign in at the local social welfare building.
