Time for the beards and some considered chin stroking.

What is it that you all hope to get from working in the games industry? This is both for people in the industry, but also aspirants.

What’s drawing you to the flame?

      *strokes stubble on chin*

      Nice topic!

Lets see, my goal is to become a 3D artist for a games company. Why? I want to be able to see things I created out of thin air “living” in an interactive enviroment. Maybe its Frankenstein Syndrome but to be able create something and collaborate with other talented individuals to bring that creation to life via the animations, sounds, music, enviroments, script, direction etc in a videogame is just fantastic! Its like having your own toy workshop as a kid and you and your friends being able to create any toy to want to play with. :D

Considering I have now come to the conclusion that I am not ‘built’ fpr programming I would be inclined to sway this way also. I would like to focus on the intergration of sound into Games, as I think it has yet to reach its full potential. I found Halo’s music quite ‘epic’ in the snense that the composer has made the player aware of time and space throught the possibility of sound. I would also like to focus more on Graphic illustration, Being the Fuel behind Noopticals fire. Alot of the time I would like to first draw my concept, then attempt to model it. anyway, interesting post.

Its great to have traditional art skills for 3D work, because, like you said you can do some great concept sketches from which to work with. I’m ok at sketching but only at a level where I just draw bits and pieces while I model just to help me visualise certain aspects of the modeling, because usually I’m working with referance photos and so there is some guesswork involved most of the time and a pencil and paper is good to help get my head around the modeling.

I have been drawing since my early days, so instinctively I can draw almost anything. A skill, which while not indigenous to me is none-the-less useful is my ability to draw directly from my head. Alot of people find it hard to believe that you can fabricate somehting from your head, but I can. My main area of influence comes from Yoshitaka Amano who ironically draws influence from celtic myths and legends such as Tir Na Og and Fionn. The ability to draw freely within the boundries of your own mind, which by common standard isn’t all that limited at all is a great Gift. Someday I may even afford a Scanner so I can fully abuse my ability to draw from mind, a simply Import into Max then and things could really start to swarm!

What I’ve got is a job that I like, a job that isn’t monotonous, giving me new and different problems to deal with every day. Its not a job where I do 9-5 every day, but when you enjoy what you are doing, you don’t mind a few extra hours ( as long as its not constant ).
Apart from when deadlines loom, everyone seems to enjoy the work and so work atmosphere is good. Where else in a programming job would you get that ??
What I’d like to get from in the future….i’d need to think about that!

Working at an established company such as Core must be a challange as I imagine. Omen, you are lucky to hold such a position and I only hope that come 2006-07 that the Industry will have picked up somewhat so that people like me Nooptical and Xero can have a shot at working for such a company. :)

On a day to day basis I will enjoy programming almost anything that is reasonably challenging, but my long term ambition isnt to as much to do something different every day but to have an end result product that really gets an emotional response from people.

I get a great sense of satisfaction out of seeing, hearing and talking to people who have gained enjoyment out of the work I have put in.

I want self fulfilment in my job. I don’t feel like I am working to my potential at the moment – this is for various reasons.

Obviously I want to work on ‘good projects’ and contribute worthwhile ideas and design, but I don’t think its essential to be working on super original I.P. in order to do this

If your content with your input on a project it doesn’t matter if its somewhat of a me-too game or licence.

Ofcourse, my opinion may change when I work on more titles..heh

(P.S. What is it that you all hope to get from working in the games industry?

      Answer: I want 11 year olds to think I’m cool :) )
