‘The report from the Teaching with Games project, and related surveys, are online at:

    http://www.futurelab.org.uk/research/teachingwithgames/findings.htm

Abstract: the Teaching with Games project was a one-year study designed to offer a broad overview of teachers’ and students’ use of and attitudes towards commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) computer games in schools. It aimed to identify the factors that would impact the use of these entertainment games in school and describe the processes by which teachers plan and implement games-based learning in existing curricular contexts. Finally, it aimed to provide recommendations for future games-based learning approaches in schools for teachers, developers and policy makers.’

There is no slant per se, at least not a negative one – it is a Popular culture collection of essays. My piece is about the different reactions to GTA VC and the Hot Coffee story in the US, Europe and Australia and the subsequent regulatory responses.

Thanks everyone. In the middle of first week back at school madness here at NUIM but this did make me take a few mins out to see who I am meant to be keeping company with! Did make me smile, some pretty powerful and successful women in there.

Ronny, the GTA book is meant to be out in the US late this year or early next so I will let you know.

Omen – let me konw if there are any more voice over jobs to be done by women – used to love doing those in college!

The course has been going since Sept 2004 and we ran a feature on it just before that – see http://www.gamedevelopers.ie/features/viewfeature.php?article=100

hard to tell re levels of skills etc. as the first cohort are only in third year but I am sure they will give some feedback as to how it is going so far. there are a few people on the boards from there although this is only the first week back at college for most students so give them a week or two to get going.

I don’t think hiring more women will necessarily lead to more female gamers if nothing else changes

And I don’t think women know how to make games for girls any better than men do..Read what Brenda Laurel wrote about her time at Purple Moon

This should be a diversity discussion, not a gender one.

But I do think many girls are just as competive as men so that is not a starting point in the debate. Now there may be issues around public and private enjoyment of competition – that seemed to come up in some of my interviews – rather than competition per se.

I also got asked by a student in the US last week why most of the academic stuff written about the conditions and cultures of production in the games industry was being done by female academics!! There are exceptions, but not that many..
