I’ll agree with that, that’s where I met Aphra, Mal and the lads from Torc for the first time.

Aphra usually sticks anything relevant up on the GD.ie website, and if you haven’t been to one I’d recommend them, even just for purely informational purposes as well as getting the chance to meet people.

    Heya Mike,

Well remember most colleges are finishing up either already in the next week or two, so get one or two Irish graduates to help you out >:)

    Ahh no, seriously now.

Get Conrad Gallagher legging it away with all those paintings under his apron through the streets of Dublin on the way to Dublin airport. Speeding on a motorway with a 30mph speed limit, crashing through the port tunnel and getting stuck in traffic. All with some garda cars behind them, gripping stuff.

I was wondering what the new address for that was, because the .com version went down.

Cheers for that, and welcome to the boards

Hmm, let me see. A Quakeque Northside-Southside FPS?

Or a RTS with the people’s republic of cork?

To be honest with you, anything too Irish would be overmade to get the US market, and that would bring the Oirishness around.

Mind you, with Irish humour we could do a great version of a comedy type game, or I’m sure an Irish version of The Getaway might go down well, booting it down Grafton St. and crashing into the spike

Hmm, that sounds good. Whenever sounds good although I’ll be around Europe on the tear for the month of June so I’ll make the next one.

As for a location, town seems pretty handy, anywhere will do if we can get a couple of tables reserved and the two places we’ve been to date have been a good laugh. Themed evenings though might be a bad idea, Mal might arrive dressed as a mobile phone >:) But you never know, you could get Nokia to bring along some of their N-Gages to let us all have a looksie considering they’re sponsoring the site.

I doubt catering would be much of a problem either, we always have Abrakestabra after a sessiun. But as Mal was saying, maybe having it something like the 2nd tuesday of a month or something like that might allow people to stick it down in their diaries in advance to make arrangements, as well as letting journalists know where to come if any of the companies want to get some announcements made.

Well that’s what I had in mind, and for the same reasons as you Mal. Anyone else up for it, because if they’re not we’ll go on the tear anyway, it’s always a bit of craic :)

    Heya Aphra and guys,

Do you want me to look into trying to contact one of the companies who either previously were in Ireland like Funcom, or else companies which started up but failed? Surely having the other side of the coin as to why exactly they couldn’t make it, and criticisms and the like might be benefitial for everyone who does want to set up a company?

Wouldn’t one of the IT’s be more appropriate for it though, as opposed to a university. Even having a dedicated course in one of the smaller courses may be an idea.

As for private courses, I haven’t been made aware of any for as long as I was running Irish Player, and we were asking all the time as we were constantly getting queries about how people could get involved in development, and this is part of the reason why I’ve chosen to go the business end as I can hopefully get experience within the industry without having to move abroad.

Aphra, what about contacting the IT’s about doing presentations? Surely all the IT societies in colleges would be interested, as I know DIT Kevin St. has a big gaming society.

Finally, when I was at Higher Options back when I was doing my own leaving cert, there were a number of 3rd levels offering computer design courses. Abartay was the one which caught my eye, but I think there were some others in Portsmouth or somewhere else down in the South of England, as well as one or two in Wales.

With the amount of people who are interested in getting involved in development, how would you guys feel about getting a day-long event together, like what First Tuesday do with a small co ver charge, a couple of presentations and speakers and the like. Surely if you could get colleges to tell IT students about it, as well as bringing on those seriously interested from leaving cert you could invite some of the education authorities along and show them that there is an interest among both school leavers and students currently studying.

Just my thoughts anyway, feel free to rip them to shreds >:)

Well I was a games journalist for over three years, and I still do not classify myself as a hardcore gamer. I used to though, before all that.

I think the difference is knowledge of games. Hardcore gamers will know every inch of a game genre, such as hardcore FPS players. These hardcore gamers per genre are the people who keep the games going, as they’ll generally support a particular genre even if quite a lot of shite titles come out, as have done recently.

There isn’t really any reason to mull about it though. Think of The Sims, it wasn’t really the hardcore gamers that got this game to ship over six million units, it was the casual gamers who liked the idea, and it makes more sense during development to try to make a game that will appeal to the casual gamer, as the hardcore gaming group really is small, and mainly focused on PC titles as opposed to console titles.

    Just my thoughts anyway.

I’d like to say the same as Paul, last night was an excellent presentation that gave plenty of food for thought, as well as the chance to meet even more of you guys working within the industry. I enjoyed myself immensely and I’d like to say go raibg maith agat to Aphra, Dr. Collins and everyone else I spoke to.

    How’s it going there everyone!

Jaysus, there seems to be more interest than I thought here, cheers Aphra as it’ll make things a lot easier.

Anyway, my name is Jamie McCormick, currently studying Marketing & Management in DIT. I’m 20, been an avid gamer for most of my life. I was also editor of IrishPlayer.com until the end of February when it closed down, have been writing games related articles for newspapers and magazines around the country, as well as writing feature articles for GameDevelopers.ie that will hopefully give you some insight into the industry.

I’m not a game developer, but hope to go on placement within the industry and specilise in interactive entertainment marketing side of things which may be helpful on the business side of things.

    Talk to ya!

    Jamie
