Its so good, they named a quality-control criterion to assure consistent and optimal audio and visual performance in cinemas after it!!!
Its a long time since I saw it but it was pretty good from what I remember, I’ll be checking it out again on its release. -
In my humble opinion it’s well worth a view. It’s a little film-schooly in places, and not an easy-going Sunday evening family flick. It’s slightly pretentious (arguably), very Orwellian, more sinister than the directors subsequent space operas and kinda dated, but you can see hints of what was too come.
Worth looking out for.

Yes, THX was originally (and still is, I believe) a LucasFilm initiatve to standardise excellence in audiovisual playback in theaters and, later, in home playback.
It had a degree of cache in the past but has since sold out to the likes of Creative so now every tinny speaker can get THX certification of some description.
Arguably, of most use, is the re-equalisation feature of THX certified av amplifiers. This is designed to compensate for frequency emphasis (or de-emphasis) on theatrical soundtrack mixes. Increasingly, however, DVDs are re-mixed to take this into account.
Many audiophiles would argue that THX certification is essentially meaningless and that better value can be had in non-THX branded components, (since manufacturers must pay significant amounts to LucasFilm for the testing and certification).
If I remember correctly, THX, in the context of the original arty movie, stood for something like “Thomas Holson Experiment” – quite meaningless in the context of a/v quality certification and an example of Mr. Lucas’ ego application. But than again, if you have the money and the luck, why not!
