I was browsing through the Game Dev company listings on Gamasutra trying to find out how many game dev companies are operating out of Ireland now and i saw funcom listed.
Are they not long gone?
Also are Microsoft doing anything in Ireland even localisation?

currently, there are 16 games companies active in the Republic (and one in the North I am aware of) with 300 employees between them
Microsoft do most of their European localisation for games in Leopardstown

What Microsoft have in Leopardstown is their sound department for Microsoft Games Studios.

hey Mark..I’m trying to get them into the country, not out…
..you might be interested in this news…from Professional Ireland
‘In other broadband news, both Esat BT and UTV Internet have
reduced their monthly rates, to less than EU30 in the latter case.
For a flat EU29.99, following a EU99 set-up fee, consumers and
businesses can avail of UTV Internet’s DSL service, Clicksilver.
Esat BT has cut the price of its DSL offering to EU33.15 for
subscribers to its telephone service and EU39 for standalone
customers. These cuts follow the recent reduction by Eircom of the wholesale fees it charges other operators to use its network.’not sure about geographical availability on these services though..
does anyone know anything about this crowd?
Aphra.

Ive been in contact with a crowd in Derry that I can get to sort out at work as it has line of site to their mast in Derry. Its using wireless microwave to introduce broadband to Donegal …more specifically inishowen. The government has forgotten us but the corporate machine will always need its wheels oiled.
Problem is I have no line of site to a mast from my houseso Im stuck with an ISDN service from Eircom that spends AT LEAST 2 days a month down – no phonecalls OR net access.
Eircom don’t do broadband up here. UTV don’t touch here. Esat don’t touch here. The government don’t touch here.
Someday we’ll rise up and demand equal rights!

hi Lynchman,
do you have any more info on Radical – e.g. where they do it? Is it outsourced to someone over here or do they manage it themselves, etc.

I used to work at Funcom, they closed down in 2001 (around June I think). It was through no real fault of the Dublin office, the parent company in Norway ran into financial difficulties when Anarchy Online went over schedule and they decided to close the Dublin studio down. There was one Xbox game in development, IGN still have a preview of it here: http://xbox.ign.com/articles/136/136599p1.html
and another online adventure-type game in early development. -

I’m in Dublin about 1k from an enabled exchange and I can’t get broadband either due to problems with my line. My line is a new one in a new house. So if you think you are frustrated….
