Does anyone know where the hell Lara Croft has gone? Last I heard Eidos gave the franchise to their American developers, Crystal Dynamics. The Core Design website haven’t been updated in an age so there’s no info there. Then from what I can see Crystal Dynamics don’t even have a site… or one that I can find anyway.

Can anyone shed any light on the progress of Tomb Raider?

      Thanks.

      Hehe…
You asked in the right place. I had an interview with Core on Friday.
Tomb Raider is gone to Crystal Dynamics. As far as i know, Crystal Dynamics are doing the next one, they have the license for it anyway, and I can’t imagine Eidos just giving up on it.

Well, as it was explained to me….
Imagine you were working on Tomb Raider. 2 years later, you finish the game. Hurray!. Next week, you start work on Tomb Raider. Two years later, you finish the game. Hurray!. Next week you start working on Tomb Raider. And on and on and on….
That was how things were getting in Core and the inspiration to continue making good TR games just wasn’t there. There was no variety in their work. I’d imagine, especially for the artists.
They’re quiet happy to be rid, although I’m sure the revenue would be missed….
As I’m sure you all know, last year was a bad year for Core and some of the staff, including the director, to start up Circle. Eidos have now taken a stronger role in structuring Core and they feel stronger now than before.
Well I’ll be sure to let you know if/when I become a Core employee. :)
Does anyone know what Derby is like?

There was a documentary on Lara last night, I only caught the very tail end of it…It was on one of the digital channels.

I think the main premise was to track the development of the game from very early beginnings to how it became a movie..

If I come across again, Aphra, I’ll tape it like those other progs, which I still have on my desk ..

      :o

Thanks…not being in digital TV land has its disadvantages…

it would be interesting to do a media content analysis to see if, measured in column inches and TV minutes, Lara is the most talked about games character ever??

who else would be up there..Crash, Mario…?

      Aphra.

      Think Lara is number one.
Having made the front cover of none games magazine, she’s the queen of games.
Mario probably is up there, but it think its fair to say that he lacks the sex appeal to garner a wider audience.

Princess and Yoshi might have a thing or two to say about that.

Yup, Lara was the first ‘sexy’ sprite.
She was portrayed as the doorway to female gaming, but with the short shorts and generous proportions up top, she was a guy’s creation without doubt and as such became a boy’s sexy computer friend. Things even went as far as having the ‘Nude Raider’ patch!
Sex appeal means a lot in gaming circles today. Look at “Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball”. From what I’ve heard its a terrible game, but guys play it cos its ‘easy on the eye’.
In my defense, I’ve never played DoABV and only played TR for about 5 minutes. The above is just an opinion and not a personal observation.

I didnt like it, I found EDGE’s 8/10 a bit hard to swallow – “its a relaxation game” – bah!

Imagine Tomb Raider meets Thief – If the warren spector rumours are true, I would actually be interested for the first time in a Tomb Raider game.

However , I think it was a good move to shift it to another studio, get a fresh perspective on it -and update the control system :)

Even worse than EDGE giving the game 8/10 was that they had a poor girl from the game wearing her bikini on the front page of the mag with her breasts begging gamers to pick up a copy and aid poor sales.

Admittedly it’s not the worst game in the world but it was a shameful ploy by Microsoft to make a quick buck. How successful would a Tekken beach volleyball game be?

Big freaky monster versus old dude… hmmm

And just to clarify it, Crystal Dynamics is definitelly the company making the new Tomb Raider.
      Job vacancy from Gamasutra:
Crystal Dynamics is looking for programmers at all levels. Specifically, the Tomb Raider team is looking for …..

i remember reading about some report/survay, that found that Mario and Sonic were the mosty recognized Characters in the US during 94/95, beating micky mouse and friends!

also i remember reading another survay over a year ago, that put Lara 5/ish place in the top ten game Characters. this was before her ps2 game. can’t remeber who was first.
