I know that Sony has a huge install base of PS in Ireland, but why is that?
Was in Wexford today looking for programming books….that was a non-starter!….but I noticed anywhere that was selling games seemed to be selling 90% Playstation games.
Is it because there are so many Playstations in the in country, or is it because of the sale stand in shops holding so many PS2 games that people buy the consoles? In one shop I only saw PS2 games…no other console, no PC games.Either way, because of the way the games were on display, it just doesn’t seem likely that people would likely buy a Xbox or GC. Is this a common sight around the country, or is wexford backwards?
I know in Game you will find more PS2 games than the others, but you will at least feel the presence of XBox and GC there.

Sony, unlike the other two, have an office dedicated to promoting such products here. They have gone to the trouble of making targetted ad campaigns etc.
If one goes even deeper, they may also be a relationship between timing of the console and the celtic tiger.

From personal experience, a lot of places that just sell games casually, ie, video shops, or shops that sell mainly toys, and don’t have a dedicated games department, sell soley PS2 games.
In dublin, if you go looking for games, you go to a games specific retailier, like Game, or somewhere with a large games section, that will carry all formats.
In the country, you go to the local toyshop/newsagents which just happens to carry games.
And these seem to stock largely PS titles.I really dont know which came first, the market penetration of the PS, or the availability of games, but if I had to guess I would say the market penetration did.
I would imagine that if GC and XBox split the market equally with Sony, you’d see all 3 platforms.
I know that some of the same shops that now carry PS games almost exclusively, used to once stock Snes and Megadrive(genisis) games equally, back when the install base was split more equally.
That’s just talking from personal experience – I used to live in the midlands before studying in dublin.
Bear in mind there could be some clever distrubition deals I’m not aware of.
But I would say it’s from the fact that PS have dominated the market that you’re not seeing smaller retails carry just PS games.

it’s market penetration,
Non-Games stores can shift PSX/PS2 titles easily, parents etc. can pick one up as a present, and considering there’s nearly half a million PS2’s and even more (still working) PSOne’s which are usually handed down to younger siblings, most stores stock them. Mind you, it’s usually a case of having a few copies of the latest game, and platinum/budget titles as opposed to a full range like in a specialist store.

In the chain “Game” – I believe publishers and platform holders can pay to have their stuff display better – with prefence to location in the store etc…

Well it is technically illegal for any chain, be it food, clothes, games, music etc/ to take money to place certain products, but gifts etc. are seen as ok, and it’s one of these areas where it just happens anyway.

I used to work in a video game store, and it was very chicken egg situation with store layout. PS2 and PSX before it were at the front and had the most wall bays, because it had the biggest install base, and it had the biggest install base because of the store space.

Game is different. They usually have a good representation of both XBox and GameCube. But, I have issues with them too…developers paying to have the name of their games on staff t-shirts?? Come on!
I just find it a bit dis-heartening that Sony has such a strong position. I didn’t realise just how strong it was til recently and then when I looked around me, it was really noticeable. Here’s hoping next gen evens the scores a bit and make for all-round better hardware
