Ditto. You wouldn’t get far in Dublin on that money, despite this being a fantastic opportunity.

Yeah thats the thing thought – its foot in the door stuff, if they see your sheet hot then you will be in good position to get a fulltime job next time they are hiring.
Its abuse eager people time – what the GAMES INDUSTRY IS ALL ABOUT :D :D

Regardless of the money, its an excellent opportunity for a graduate or student and the Demonware guys are sound. I’d say it’ll be an educational and rewarding experience.

Exactly!.
If it was a young programmer (god what a thought) I’d race to do it.

Oh yeah, i’d agree….
just not for me with the wage
great for someone going into final year….grads would or at least should expect more money than that -

Who cares if they’re not offering a high salary. All I’m interested in is getting game related job for the Summer. I’d work for free this Summer if it meant gaining experience in the games industry.

It’s easy to say that if you’re living in Dublin (perhaps you’re not, I don’t know), but anyone relocating to the capital on that salary wouldn’t have much of a quality of life.
I agree this is a fantastic opportunity, but one clearly aimed at students/graduates in dublin.

Hi Eoin,
Well if you’re looking for something down in Cork, it might do no harm to give Selatra a call, I think their details are in the companies list on the main GameDevelopers.ie site.

And this is why people scuff when you talk about a career in the games industry, its not seen as a REAL career with REAL money. -

When was this opportunity posted? I would have been all over this if I’d known about it late last year. I’m doing the BSc in software engineering in DCU, and we have to spend 6 months working between April and Sept this year – but the process starts in Oct of the previous year, and a lot of people get locked into jobs very early on (I got mine in Novemeber – and it’s completely irrelevant to games :( ). I’m sure you’ll get someone good, but your pool of candidates would probably be wider if you advertised these well in advance. I for one, would have jumped at this – I’ve done a fair bit of OpenGL/DirectX and my own software renderers and physics simulations. I’d have loved this (and the pay is actually better than a lot of my friends are getting working in banks/financials for their work placement!).

Hehehe…..INTRA….everyone gets rode for pay during those 6 months. Best way to get around that is to get a placement abroad :)

Hi PeterK,
It was only posted about a week and a half ago.
Aphra,
The position has been filled so if you could take it down from the jobs section, it would be appreciated.
Everyone else,
If we have any more positions available in the future, we’ll do the same and post them on GameDevelopers.ie
Cheers
Jamie

Ah well, at least I didn’t overlook this somehow when I was looking for a placement. But I’d seriously suggest that you should advertise these summer placements well well in advance, particularly if you want to get the college crowd (well, the DCU crowd anyway ;)). The best people get snapped up early, so the earlier you put these jobs out there, the more likely you are to find someone really good! You should also look into the INTRA program at DCU and other college work placement programs. A lot of really smart people I know would love to get into games, but it’s difficult to turn down other placement offers in the vague hope of a games position turning up later down the road – that’s exactly the position I was in.

I’d fully agree with PeterK’s sentiments re: getting in there early for work placements from an employer’s point of view… we (Intel) have to organise ours 8 – 12 months in advance which is a tad awkward to say the least

Alway worth advertising on http://www.ucc.ie/careers/
The careers service, their fairly good at letting students know about jobs, update the website daily, sometimes more..
Always hounding us during the college year, telling us to apply for opportunities. :)
Im sure theres alot of this years grad student who would jump at the opportunity, coz jobs are rare, game jobs even more so.
