The word on the street (like the US PC Gamer review) are saying this is goodness.
It is infact one of only two PC titles I’m super-psyched for, the other being Quake 4 (“not Half Life 2!” they scream).
Anway its not an issue having it day of release, not only do I not have a min spec PC all I have is an iMac and a Powerbook :(
Looks like I’ll hang about for the XBox October release, Live! co-op-me-do.

Yeah, I know :( well I do now at least.
I was using the information of fellow over-excited rabid fanboys. I can always hope though.
Closing comment from the PC Gamer (US) exclusive review:
Doom 3 took me 23 hours to complete on the medium difficulty setting. (For all those who rumored that the game would be over in a few hours- you couldnt be more wrong.) And for those 23 hours, you will never expirience a dull moment. Or even a less than mesmerizing one. Doom 3 is a masterpiece of art form – staying true to the frantic legacy of the Doom series, while ambitiously reaching new hieghts and bashing down the doors of the next generation of PC shooter. The bar is raised. Lets see someone else climb over it[/quote:c5bfb5bda4]
But what are reviews worth these days, eh Atari :)

“It’s a wrap! Hell will open its gruesome doors in August
Activision’s hugely-anticipated shooter Doom 3 will be shipped to retailers around the world on 2 August – meaning that we’re likely to see the game on shelves just a day later.
While an official on-sale date for the UK has yet to be confirmed, Activision are expected to announce it tomorrow. The obvious on-sale date would be Friday 6 August although such is the degree of anticipation for the game that retailers are likely to begin selling it from the moment they receive stock.
In related news, id Software’s CEO Todd Hollenshead has been quoted as saying that a Doom 3 demo is also imminent, although it’s unlikely to be available before the full game hits shelves.
We’ve noted at press events and shows that a number of people have commented that the game is “just Doom with incredible graphics”. Seeing as the gaming community has been gagging for just such a game for years, we say they’re missing the point. Personally, that’s exactly what we want to see when we get our hands on the finished product.
Doom has been the only shooter out there where you need to pack just as many pairs of pants as you do shotgun shells. A game that is genuinely scary is a rare beast indeed but Doom has always pulled it off by letting the game breath, not being afraid to let the game lull in seemingly empty rooms, only to jump out and rip your face off with terrifying creatures that really do get you twitching in your seat with nervous tension.
No game has been able to match Doom’s finesse at building up tension and piling on the pressure when there’s actually nothing immediately obvious that’s threatening. The fact that you know all hell is about to break lose at any moment is enough to keep your hands anxious and your eyes straining, dreading the onset of the next wave of hellish beasts…”
Well the big question is, who’s got the Specs to run this beast?

The good thing about ID games is you can make them all as ugly as quake was :) Thus they run fast, and remain true to the beauty that was quake (ignoring all this new-age ‘multitexture this’ and ‘dynamic lighting that’).
Bring back the 64 shades of brown I say!!!

“But, via a carefully worded statement, they have today revealed that the official UK release date for the PC version of the gruesome first-person shooter is set to be Friday 13 August”.

Stay away from the geforce 4 mx card, you’d be better off with a geforce 3

But what about the ATI 9550, I think it supports the whole shader thing which I suppose I’m going to need for future games, they’re all around the same price though. I had a Gforce2 and the bloody thing burnt out inside my computer, so I’m not very happy with Nvidia at the moment

I have an N-Vidia G-Force FX 5200 64 meg card and it runs Farcry and PainKiller grand, although it did cost 180 euro’s.

Even a subtle jump to an AMD 2500+ with a GeForce 3 video card that is two years old will deliver a solid gaming experience that will let you enjoy the game the way id Software designed it to be.[/quote:f462d1f78d]
On almost every test Nvidias cards won….
So it seems (as previously hinted at)….
Nvidia Cards are best for Doom3
ATI cards are best for HL2I imagine ATI will sort out their drivers to get better performance…
Overall:
All that considered, for those of you that are in the high end video card market, the GeForce 6800GT looks to very much be the sweet spot when it comes to playing DOOM 3 with all the eye candy turned on at high resolutions. Obviously the 6800 Ultra is even faster for those of you that need the best no matter the cost. If I had to make a list of high end video cards to purchase to play DOOM 3, the GeForce 6800Ultra and GeForce 6800GT would easily take the number 1 and number 2 spots with the ATI Radeon X800XT-PE rounding out the number 3 place. Pete’s concerns aren’t the build quality but rather the actual abilities of the card. The gf4 mx’s practically break merchandising laws, they’re just extremely fast geforce 2’s, and don’t have the pixel and vertex shaders you find on gf3’s. The day they pulled that stunt (ages ago) was the day alot of developers got really pissed off with nvidia.

AS I said ATi will probably just sort out this Doom3 issue with a driver update – ATI’s Chris Hook:
“Doom III isn’t even available yet, and we all know that some of our competitors use partial precision where possible,” he noted, implying that not all benchmarks are created equal. “We expect to have updated drivers available in the coming weeks,” he added.[/quote:1ee3fad909]

If you have a low-end video card, fear not, DOOM 3 will look good on it. By default, all of the advanced quality settings such as shadows, specular lighting, and bump mapping are enabled. As long as your video card meets the system requirement of a GeForce4 MX-440 64MB, all of these effects will be available to you. The only effect that will not be present is Heat Haze, which requires a DX9 level video card. [/quote:1117c9695e]
NVIDIA versus ATI Image Quality:
We know that many of you are concerned with the image quality provided between these two manufacturers’ video cards. In our evaluation, which consisted of swapping many video cards back and forth, we did not notice any differences in image quality between the cards at all. With both brands of cards, DOOM 3 was being presented exactly the way it was meant to.[/quote:1117c9695e]
GOOD STUFF!
