My friend just got back from the states, and brought me back Doom 3!
I have had to turn down the settings to low/medium but it still looks absolutely amazing, the presentation is unbelievable. For instance, when you start off you are in a docking bay and you can go up to the dock computer and as soon as your crosshair goes onto the computer screen it turns into a mouse pointer which you use to navigate the system. So you can go up to this screen and check various ship records etc and then you can go up to the cargo computer and check their cargo, if you delete a record on that computer and go back to the docking computer its deleted there too! This kind of stuff is all over the place. You can see people typing into their computers and actually watch what they are typing on their computer screen! Sweet….
The game is pretty scary in parts, where its dark and you suddenly see a shadow dart across a wall etc…..
The weapons are great, although I think the machine gun sounds a bit shit, but the shotgun is great fun! You also have a flashlight, but you can’t use the flashlight and a weapon at the same time which leads to many nervous moments in dark places…..Anyway, I’m going back to play it some more!
;)

What are your system specs?

You lucky git, Nooptical!, and ya what are your specs?, because want to get it on fri with my P4 512ram and 64 mb graphics card, is there any hope for me?
-

I’ve had it myself for about a week now and it is amazing. My system is GeForce 4, Amd 2.4Ghz processor and 768 Ram and I can only get it to play at Medium Spec. It plays at 640×480 resolution at that spec but it looks like its 1024×768. The Graphics are amazing.
The work they’ve done on the game is amazing. The whole torch or weapon thing is scary. I’ve been terrified playing it with the lights out. The guys making it took every single opportunity to scare you while you play it. I don’t know how many times I’ve jumped out of my seat as I walk down a corridor or up some stairs to be greeted by some monster leaping out of the dark.
The game is a masterpiece. The story is very straight forward but the player involvement is second to none. Since I started the game, going to work and having a girlfriend has been an inconvenience, Its so good that I’ve wanted to keep on playing it. The game rocks.

Friend brought it with him on his trip down to Killarney at the weekend, runs fine on my 2.4/512/ati9500 at 640 x 480. What Ive played of it so far has been most enjoyable, far less environment interaction then I would expect HL2 is going to have, but some very nice scripting and interactions…like the first time you look in a mirror after the “event” :)

Your only weakpoint there is the 64mb graphics card Omega. But you should be ok.
My specs are Athlon 1800+, 512MB DDR and Geforce 4 ti4600 and I have it running at 800X600 with everything on except V-sync. I have 2x anti-aliasing on also. It runs at a great framerate, it has only slowed down maybe twice in the whole time I’ve been playing it, and that was only for about a second.
Of course many of the in game effects aren’t there due to the fact that the Geforce 4 isn’t a DX9 card, so things like when looking through the perspex windows objects aren’t distorted on the other side etc, but it still looks great.
By the way, if anyone is expecting a clever shooter like Half Life…..don’t. This is pure Doom, ie: mindless shooting and pretty dumb enemies. But that is whats good about it, its just non-stop action!

I have only been playing it on “Marine” at the moment, although its pretty easy on that setting(there are a few hairy moments, but its pretty much plain sailing so far). So when I play it again I will lash the difficulty up.
-
09/08/2004 at 1:31 pm #13923AnonymousInactive
MARINE! what!…….come on man pump up the volume, Doom isn’t meant for to be played on that Level, they just put that in there to make ‘crap gamers’ feel good about themselfs!, start again…..on nightmare….HUH!(or so thats what the marketing guy’s say, although I have seen Burt Reynolds playi……..shut up!)
-
09/08/2004 at 2:02 pm #13924AnonymousInactive
Just finished the game. Was a bit easy. Marine is the “normal” level and I would have assumed it would be at least a bit challenging on that level(ala FarCry – which was quite hard even on “normal”), but it was a bit simple.

Erm……the final boss looks amazing, but is very easy in my opinion…..probably the easiest boss in the whole game.

13/08/2004 at 3:20 pm #14054AnonymousInactive
just collected my copy down game this morning..
cracked into it at work.. lucky today was experiment day so free to do “other things”.
up to adminstration level.. great game, fierce tense.. no so point and shoot as the previous one..
a.i. seems to be very good.. also i like those helper spider bots.. very handy aid in big battles.. also their team a.i. seems to be very good, in that they dont seem to clutter your view, unlike some team player characters in games (Tom clancy rainbox six).defo worth a purchase.. cant wait to take it online..
-
13/08/2004 at 4:38 pm #14056AnonymousInactive
Hmmm…those AI bots started shooting at me when I accidentally got in between it and a randomly spawning bad guy behind me. Runs fine on my machine even without the new ATI drivers, though I guess I’ll install them anyway.
Still have 3 more series of Bablyon 5 to watch before I get back to doom though – irritating the way things all seem to arrive at once.

Fuck me!, Got Doom yesterday and well here it goes:
Lights out headphones plugged, music full. there’s this bit where you enter a bathroom(I won’t say what happens because some of you may not be that far yet)and well lets just say I shat me pants, big time!, I don’t think I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing such a ‘tense’ game.
A masterpeice in evry sense of the word, brilliant.
more tonight after the pub! -
14/08/2004 at 12:37 pm #14066AnonymousInactive
I knew you’d like it…… ;)
I’m tempted to play it again, but I’m going to hold out until I do my next computer upgrade and play it with full graphical splendour……
-

I really love the radio chatter between all the marines as they fight helplessly to survive straight after the incident. really scary game. great, just great

My mate got it and he’s running it on an Alienware P4 3.2 GHz pro with a gig of Ram and a N-Vidia FX 9200 Ultra and he still can’t run it on high, or Rather the ‘Ultra High’ setting that is available, though it did look amazing even on high, the amount of additional effects is obvious and having the anti-aliasing at multiply 16 really makes the game clean cut. id really have outdone themselves with this one.
*the first time you encouter the ‘Dog Demon’ is class, nice physics engine*
Duck Tape Mod: http://www.gamershell.com/download_6645.shtml
why would you?, if your too scared to traverse the dark with gun in pocket and flash light on, try this, solves both.
-
16/08/2004 at 10:50 am #14103AnonymousInactive
My friend has a computer with lesser specs than that and he has it running on “Ultra High” at 1024 x 768, only 8x anti aliasing though, and it is running perfect. Your fiends comp might need a bit of tweaking to get the most out of the system by the sounds of things(especially if he is running XP).
-
16/08/2004 at 10:55 am #14105AnonymousInactive
Ya maybe, and why would XP be….er difficult?
Do you know of a site that could point you in the right direction about maximising your machines performence Nooptical?, I’m running XP also.
I’m running Doom at 640 by 480 with evrything else on(advanced options included), whereas I can run FarCry at a much higher spec?
-
16/08/2004 at 11:24 am #14109AnonymousInactive
XP just has a load of stupid options to make it look nicer and they can slow down the machine. Just turn off all the fading menus, animated minimizes/maximizes, shadows under cursors etc. Also get rid of the default XP theme…..and use the classic windows one. And before you run doom, close any software that is running in the taskbar(like Antivirus, firewalls etc – unless your connected to the net of course).
There is a lot more you can do, download XP Smoker and SpyBot and use these to get rid of some of XPs useless “features” and any spyware that is on your system which run in the background and do nothing but eat resources. -

*POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD*
Unexpected innovation(well for Doom anyway) while playing the other night, you get to this bit where you have to make a decision, your commander orders you to transmit a distress signal and then this other bloke pleads with you to do the opposite, the choice is yours.
I chose to not transmit the Signal as I hadn’t actually physically seen the Commander and for all I knew it could have been “himself” trying to trick me into sending rescue ships, which ofcourse upon arrival would be overrun with blood thirsty demons and shiped back to earth.
Then again maybe I’m just reading to much into it. Nice idea on id’s behalf though.
-
19/08/2004 at 10:58 am #14241AnonymousInactive
I did the same. Next time I’m going to send the message. Although I doubt it will make too much of a differance to the game…..this is Doom afterall. ;)

So can someone clarify the story for me?
[Spoilers ahead]
Ancient cicilisation on Mars create portals which accidently open gateways to hell, and are subsequently attacked by demons. They create soul cube and sacrifice most of their population, to drive off attackers, then leave tablets to warn visitors about the risks of the portals, and a soul cube for protection. The remaining members travel to earth and colonise that. Thus, in a twist to make Charlton Heston blush, they are our descendents.
Did I get that right?
Wouldn’t it have made sense NOT to have included the instruction manual as to how to make the portals in the first place???
I’m like, well, duh, and they’re like, whatever.
Did the evil Doctor get turned into the big demonic bird at the end?
Was the Boss Monster Satan himself?
Cool story though.

Oh, sorry didn’t realize.
lets just say that the developer left somethings up to your imagination, by the way what option did you choose mid way through the game, you know where you either send the distress signal or not.*I knew my hunch was right nooptical, albiet the one about if I had sent the message and brought the fleet to mars, well you know the rest, Hell on earth as it were*

I chose not to call them. The Evil guy later said that he was going to signal them himself, so I think the ‘decision fork’ returned back to the original path pretty soon after.

Ya, me too. Did’nt you think the doctor was a little cliched in the Evil department, I mean I could have told you he was evil the minute I set foot on the place. he he.
-
25/08/2004 at 8:30 am #14382AnonymousInactive
Yeah, I didn’t trust him one bit. In fact, many of the characters were a bit one dimensional. I would have liked to have seen some more variety in the latter scientists as well.
So, can anyone reconcile the story for me?
