I was just on the Doom site and watched an interview with John Carmack, Everyone know’s that he’s a programming god but what interests me is how did he manage his new engine, if I’m not mistaken is it not the ability to create high res Character models and texture maps and then proceed to reduce the poly count whilst retaining the detail.

I was just wondering if anyone knows how this is done, oh and does anyone have any pointers as to where you could have a look at some of his code.

The quake 1 source code is freely available (gpl licence i think). Have a quick search for it on idsoftware.com or failing that, google.

dont they have a tool which takes a high poly character and reduces it to a low poly character along with a thing called a normal map. a normal is like a bump map i think, it gives the impression of depth on the texture where there is none. not too sure tho…by the way, i watched an interview with carmack on gamespot…his voice is quite annoying!!! didnt expect it to be like that…..

Ya, but isn’t the effect only profitable in areas with high volumes of lighting?, the Doom 3 characters only look so good because the areas they traverse are so starkly lit, the light refracts of the map surface and seeps into the ‘bump map’, is this not correct?
oh and does anyone know where Romero is these days, haven’t heard anything about him in ages(well since Daikatana).

The next iteration of Doom will have to have Carmack and Romero working together again…..(-:

Well he left Ion Storm and set up some new company, Monkey brains or something. I think they did the Red Faction port to the NGage. I think he may even have left them now.

heard a rumour (online) that he married a young Asian or Eastern-European girl and went to work for a games company in whatever country she was from. not sure how reliable that is, but there was a photo with the article for what it’s worth

His rep has gone to crap since Daikantanaennana, I couldn’t give a Monkeys( :p ) what he is doing now to be honest…..

A little sour there Nooptical, but then again his rep has gone to crap. But in all fairness he was partly responsible for two of the most awesome FPS’s ever, namely Doom and Deus Ex.

Deus Ex.[/quote:7adacd14a3] don’t think Romero had anything to do with Deus Ex… Tom Hall and he set up Looking Glass Studios somewhere in Texas together to do Dai Katana, they then quickly set up another Looking Glass studios in Austin with Doug Church, Warren Spector et al. When Dai Katana tanked, Lokking Glass (the Romero one) closed, and Looking Glass Austin went on to make Deus Ex

Eh?, I though Romero set-up Ion Storm which then proceeded to make Deus Ex, wasn’t Looking glass the original team behind Theif, or am I completely wrong?

Actually, I think both of us are partly correct and partly wrong!

He did indeed set up Ion Storm… but wasn’t involved in Deus Ex. Looking Glass, which did both the Thief and Deus Ex series, was either originally Ion Storm Austin (different studio, but same company, to Romero’s) or became it later

      sorry for confusion

I think I have you now Idora, it’s a bit like Rockstar and Rockstar north(with the hole DMA confusion).

Anyway, apparantly the lead designers behind the original Theif and Deus-EX have left due to the more mainstream approach to the latest iterations of both franchises, I think PC owners will agree with that statement, Indeed I do actually feel sorry for Fans of the original Deus-Ex, as the 2nd edition isn’t a patch on the original.

Deus Ex(1&2) was made by Ion Storm.
It wasn’t made by Looking Glass Studios, which developed Thief.

So did Ion Storm buy Looking Glass studios recently???
Maybe thats why Theif fan’s have been upset by the latest game in the series, new Dev-team. More or less.

apologies for mistake above. As far as I can make out, this is the correct timeline of events:

      – Romero & Tom Hall set up Ion Storm Dallas
      – they develop Anachronox & Daikatana
      – Looking Glass (Warren Spector et al) make System Shock & Thief
      – Looking Glass closes
      – then either became Ion Storm Austin or many of the key folks (Spector among them) joined Ion Storm Austin
      – Daikatana released & tanks; Ion Storm Dallas closes and some folks move to Ion Storm Austin
      – Ion Storm Austin develops Deus Ex
      – acquired by Eidos
      – develops Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3

      …something like that anyway!
