      Hi y’all,

Brrr… Just emerging from the Evil Dead part of Half-Life 2 (things you can do with a can of paint and a circular saw) and was wondering if anyone worked, or knows of anyone who worked, in Funcom Dublin.

It’s for a retrospective feature for gamedevelopers.ie. Now I’ve already spoken to Funcom themselves and a few people who worked for the company from mainland Europe and beyond, but no one hailing from the aul homeland. Any ideas?

      Ta,
      Pavel.

Hi everyone I know Pavel was keen to track down more Funcom people to incorporate your memories into this month’s feature. Anyway he had to go with what he had but please do continue the discussion here…

I worked in Funcom Dublin. Was it a good experience? Yes and no. Yes because I learned alot and met some nice people. Some of whom I still keep in touch with. No because it was a company that was run terribly, both from the Dublin side and the Norway end.

I remember the day we tried to ‘save money’ by disabling every second light in the ceiling. I’m not kidding!

I also remember getting a rather fancy sleeping bag as a Christmas bonus.

There were some serious egos in Funcom that tainted the otherwise feel good factor of the place. It was weird, because it was actually the humble guys that possessed the most talent and they’re the ones I learned the most from.

On the upside, we did all get to travel over to the Oslo office and go snowboarding/skiing in the snowy mountains of Norway for a weekend. That was really cool!

To this day I don’t understand why it was closed. Funcom Dublin made good games and were likely to release another good one with the XBox game they were working on. The powers that be could have at least looked around for a potential buyer of the studio rather than letting all that talent and IP disappear like that.

A company called Eurocom came over and offered jobs to alot of the guys so that was good.

While the Funcom topic is hot, I heard of a few rumours about working at the company.

One was that the main ( Irish ) manager used to keep an eye out for people coming in after 9am, and would dock an hours pay for every say 15 minutes they were late. Now this doesn’t sound TOO bad, but this was done regardless of whether the person would work to 10 at night, or had worked late the night before.
