With the current trend in Hollywood being the raping of the Marvel and D.C Comics licences it seems video games are now the new trend. With the new Doom movie coming out and with scepticism high regarding its quailty, it seems the transition of games to the silver screen isnt an easy one.

So far we’ve had Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, House Of The Dead, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, AvP and Alone In The Dark and all have been critically panned…

Now it seems theres even more conversions on the way. Far Cry has been recently announced and Bloodrayne will be with us soon. Its also been hinted at that Deus Ex and Thief may be announced soon.

So what do you guys think, should video games stay on the media theyre designed for?

On last point, its kind of funny in a way..
Of the 9 films that have been released or are officially in production that are mentioned above, 7 of them have been directed by Paul W.S Anderson and Uwe Boll. :p

of the ones you listed i think resident evil was the best.

also i heard rumours of a zelda movie.

Resident evil was a quality two movies. Acting was shite, but it fit well with the games, and explained some of the other angles of the subplots. For those who like the games they more than likely enjoyed this.

But again same shite will keep coming out. I thought the Street Fighter 2 animated movie was pretty damn good.

Far Cry would be interesting but probably stink.

ya street fighter the anime version was pretty cool. van damme version sucked balls.

far cry, couldnt really work. i read recently that halo is meant to be in pre-production

you forgot super mario bros: the movie, staring ickel Bob!

also sega sold the movie rights of Cazy Taxi at the same time as house of the dead was sold…. Cazy Taxi: the movie… its writes it’s self!

is house of the dead being made into the movie.

the story in that was shockingly bad and poorly acted. but hey when did that stop a movie being made.

Most adaptions suck because Paul WS Anderson is at the helm. If there ever was a more useless director on God’s green planet then I bet he is turning in his hypothetical grave at the thought of this young upstart usurping his crown.

Also, a lot of games haven’t got good enough stories or characters to carry a movie.
Something like Deus Ex has the potential to be an excellent movie, with a good scriptwriter, cast and a director who can give it the gritty, futuristic backdrop it needs.

I have to agree with Nooptical..most films made from games don’t work because most games don’t have enough character or story to carry a film …action films to games seem to work better but again it is about working to the strengths of the medium, not just exploiting the IP…

‘Sillywood’ should have learnt all about it in the 1980s and early 1990s when most of the games to films failed spectacularly to make any money..

But when you have business people trying to exploit IP and synergies between their different assets, the strengths of the particular medium seem to get lost….

by the way, who is this guy Paul Anderson when he is at home?

      on resident evil: afterlife.
Also heard he was involved with far cry and deus ex.

i will say though resident evil wasent the worse movie ive seen.

after all michael bay has a song dedicated to him in “team america:world police” calling him on his poor quality movie making.

I miss you more then Michael Bay missed the mark
      When he made Pearl Harbor
I miss you more than that movie missed the point
And that’s an awful lot girl
And now, now you’ve gone away
And all I’m trying to say is
Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you

I need u like Ben Affleck needs acting school
He was terrible in that film
I need u like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part
He’s way better than Ben Affleck
And now all I can think about is your smile
      and that shitty movie too
Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you

Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?
      I guess Pearl Harbor sucked
Just a little bit more than I miss you

You obviously haven’t seen “Rumble in Hong Kong” then……

Paul Anderson is involved with Deus Ex?
Oh for **** sake, this game is one of the few that actually has the potential for a good movie, and we get this guy.
This film needs someone like David Fincher directing it

      Peter,
The only reason they chose Michael Bay for the song is because if they included a song about Andersons bad movies the film would be too far over the 2 hour maximum running time demanded by the studio….

I thought the direction was good in Event Horizon, the only parts I’d question are extended camera trucks through space and in through windows to the ship interiors, that doesn’t swing with me. Although I’m a huge Fincher fan, need I remind you folks that he helmed the abysmal Alien 3?

See Kyle Cooper who did the titles on Seven and Panic room (also Spiderman 1 and 2 and Dawn of the Dead) is responsible for the intro titles on Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater? He also did MGS 2.

First time I saw it I felt the same, but on repeated viewings it improves significantly. You can see he was trying to take the franchise new places, and the problems on set (significant script problems and multiple rewrites – not to mention Ms. Weaver’s insistence that (a) Ripley be bald, (b) Ripley have a love interest, and (c) that Ripley dies – all before she’d actually read the intial script) didn’t help

I think you’d also have to cut him slack as it was his first feature…

But maybe that’s just me. I DO want to have his baby after all

resurrection was directed by joss whedon aka buffy the vampire slayer movie and series creator\writer\director. Although he was involved with toy story i think, along with a few more hit movies.

I wholeheartedly agree with Tony on this. Alien 3 is a very good addition to the franchise.
It has its own style, differant from the previous two, yet a style still recognisable as being an “Alien” film. I loved the grittiness of it, the lighting, the colors and I thought some of the acting was very good.
I think that seeing as everyone else is bald in the movie, it would have been strange if Ripley wasn’t made to shave her head due to the lice problems. However, I also didn’t like the original ending. Not the fact that she died, I thought that was a brave step, but the fact that the alien burst out of her just as she was falling…..very corny in my opinion.

Thankfully this has been changed, amoung other things, in the Special Edition Directors Cut.

Alien Ressurection is pure shite in my opinion. An insult to the series. I refused to buy the boxset because this film was in it. Bought them all seperately instead.

I’ve never understood why Event Horizon received so much criticism upon its release. I thought it was quite enjoyable in a horror/sci-fi kind of way…

As for Aliens, my main gripe with Alien3 and Resurrection was the decision to actually show more of the Aliens. The fear in the first two films was that you knew they were there but just couldnt see them until BAM, you get something like the death of Bishop in Alien. The same thing happened in AvP, you just saw them all too much for their to be any horror factor…

As for film to movie conversions in general I think the problem is they can sometimes take themselves too seriously. Now I dont mean they should be all slapstick but look at the 80s action movies, the like of Commando and anything else with Schwarzenegger in it, those types of fims (in my opinion) are classics and drew the guidlines for how proper “action films” should be made.

The problem is however, most directors have forgotten how to make them properly and it also seems that the movie going public want a little more substance in what they watch…pity really…

I agree with your point about the alien(s) being too visible. But it wasn’t too bad in Alien3, not nearly as bad as the 4th anyway…..

Ah AvP was hilarious! Anderson actually tried to forge a relationship between the girl and the Predator towards the end. Just before the Queen reemerged, the Predator starts to take off his mask and all I could hear were people laughing at how they were probably going to kiss… :p

No way lads, I thought Alien 3 was muck and was hugely disappointed with it, even more so than when I saw Predator 2. I’d give him some slack if he’d started out with Lassie Meets Herbie 2 : A Spin in the Suburbs or some other dross but not a second sequel in the Alien franchise. It was brave to let Fincher direct and, and I have read the original script (wooden spaceships anyone?) but the film as a whole doesn’t stand up to either Scott’s original or Cameron’s sequel, for me the jump between the universe of Alien/Aliens and Alien3 is just too much.

From a recent article in PcZone…

The Doom movie is set in 2145, the same year as the Doom 3 game, but it seems Callaham wasn’t joking about changing the plot. Rather than taking place on Mars, the Doom movie is set on the distant planet Olduvai. A Special Ops squadron led by The Rock (he’s playing the role of Sarge) is reacting to a distress call from a science lab on the planet. Turns out a bunch of demonic mutants are eating the scientists.

Karl Urban, who has appeared in Lord of the Rings and The Bourne Supremacy, plays the lead role as John “Reaper” Grimm. He’s the previously unnamed Marine of the game, and he’ll be the one that takes the fight all the way to hell.[/quote:a69b89c88e]

Hrm, I thought they took the Hellness out of it? And by that I’m assumin The Rock gets savaged by some nasties early on…

Not to be reviving dead topics but I didn’t think it was worthy of a new one..

Just saw this on Imdb…they’re making a movie out of the Metroid series. Now if you thought the Doom movie would be dodgy think about this one. The only upside thus far is that John Woo has signed on to produce it. No characters as of yet but the rumour mill has been churning and its said Meryl Streep has been signed on and Sarah Michelle Gellar is on the verge…

The comments are quite funny though..

Paul W.S. Anderson is a very capable director. Being an enormous fan of the Resident Evil games, I watched the first Resident Evil film and came out very satisfied with the original entry. As for the second film, I was displeased, but still appreciated it to a degree.

However, I haven’t met a person who disliked the film known as Mortal Kombat. Paul Anderson wrote and directed if I recall correctly, and it was extremely well done, with the exception of a scene or two. Don’t get me started on Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. That movie was atrocious. [/quote:7a034263ae]

I suppose he’d probably take the Alien Queen on one-on-one!!!

      Danny Glover….GRRRRRRR!

I just looked up the Director of Predator (John McTiernan) man, that guys got some AAA titles to his name:

      As A Director:

+ Basic (2003) – Good show with Mace Windu as A Soldier
      + Rollerball (2002) – **** knows, haven’t seen it
+ The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) – eh. yeah whatever.
      + The 13th Warrior (1999) – Nay bad at all…
+ Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995) – Deadly. Dare not speak against John McClane!!!

+ Last Action Hero (1993) – Dung. But it had Arnie with some quality cheese-ball lines, so its a keeper!

      + Medicine Man (1992) – James Bond as a tree-hugger. eh. alright.
+ The Hunt for Red October (1990) – James Bond as a russian hugger. eh. alright.

+ Die Hard (1988) – Nakatomi Plaza. Say No More!
+ Predator (1987) – THEE de facto survival horror.
      + Nomads (1986) – **** knows. haven’t seen it.

So why can’t we get this guy out of his retirement, and get him churning out some Computer Game crossovers. And No, Vin Diesel, you can’t play Arnie in the next Predator movie. And if “The Rock” is reading this, NO, you can’t either! It’s not all about muscle, ya gotta have a woeful Austrian/German accent to strike fear in the heart of a Predator.
