This is the last one, I’m all suggestionned out ;)
It would be cool to have an area where people could post eg screenshots from their renders, posts to demos of games they are working on etc.

ditto… will require significant server space & bandwidth to support though. Unless we take up some of the unis on their offers to host GD or parts of it on college servers

Yeah, that would be the one major stumbling block. Hosting peoples artwork, demos etc would need a lot of space.
However, I think the main point of a WIP area is for people to have a dedicated place where they can post their WIPs and look at other WIPs without having to clutter up General Discussion, or have problems finding old threads, because they will all be in one nice little area. So if space is a problem, we can just add an extra forum and keep the same rules as now with regards to attaching files of limited sizes.
Any larger files can be hosted by the person themselves and they can provide a link. -

To save space, would it be easier to ask people to find their over server space, and post up thumbnail images on the GD server. Choosing to view the thumbnail will direct you to the poster’s own website. The majority of people today will be able to find a website that they can host stuff on, and in exceptional cases, they could ask permission to host on the GD server, which could b approved or denied based on space issues.

For now, the WIP could require that people do indeed use their own server space to place the images / demos, and link directly to them.
In the future, if space is available, then maybe gd.ie hosting could be available, but for most people this won’t be required.

we did discuss this before and for both reasons of server space and legal reasons we thought it was better to link to work hosted elsewhere on personal sites etc…
….that is the idea behind the ‘gallery’ section found under community.
ideas about how to improve that facility welcome…
maybe adding one image/screenie…?
Aphra.

Hi Aphra,
The Gallery is great, although I think that an actual section in the forum entitled Showcase or Work In Progress would be of a lot more value.
People would post, as they do now in General Discussion, screenies from projects they are actually working on, rather than just final pieces of work, which people can offer opinions on etc.
I think it would encourage people to post more work in progress ( as I’m sure some people don’t want to clutter the General Discussion section ).
The initial requirement could be that the people have to host their own images, and link to them, so it should be pretty straightforward to set up.

Exactly, all it would mean is an extra forum for “Work in Progress”. People would still be linking to external files, as is done now, so no extra server space would be needed to host files.

Theres no real problem with images as these can be optimised for the web after people upload them. The new site will feature a section where people can upload images etc of their work.
With regards to other content, I would be very hesitant. Having people upload the latest versions of their games would present an unacceptable security risk, and I’m sure we’ll run short on volunteers to download every piece of content and check it for viruses and other such niceties.

Very true, this should definitely not be allowed.

This option would be cool in the future, if an artist couldn’t find their own storage space. For now though, having a WIP section, with the requirement for posters to host their own images ( as is happening in the General Discussion section ), would be great.
