Well since the Xbox 360 has its own thread I thought I’d start this one…
So far the comments of Sony CEO Ken Kutaragi have given me the biggest laugh I’ve had all day..
“It’s going to have to be 2 or 3MB, something like that,” he said, speaking about connection sizes – which are currently generally at 512k (0.5MB) in most UK broadband-enabled homes. “Ken [Kutaragi]’s even talking about 30MB! And when it gets to that, then it is broadband distribution, and people then can just download whatever game they want. But it’s got to be secure, and that’s where DNAS [Sony’s online security protocol] comes in.”
[/quote:268b1fc762]This was interesting though…
Although early reports suggested that PS3 would use four or even eight Cell CPUs, many developers now believe that the system may only have one – but rumours from those working on early development kits, which shipped to some of Sony’s closest partners earlier this year, suggest that the system will still match or even outperform the multi-processor design being used by Microsoft for Xbox 360.[/quote:268b1fc762]
Guess we’ll all find out tomorrow! :DFull article at…

Spiderman font.
Design – Its alot better than PS2’s – I never liked it black hunk.We all are saying ‘holy crap’ – how can we make those games. I am glad to be a designer not an artist – as a racing game is a racing game….is a racing game.
Those videos are great, but scary.

It looks like a health grill and I think that joypad is one of the worst looking things I have ever seen. Now until I get my hands on it, I wont moan about it too much. But I just hope this is fake press hoping to piss off the big MS!!!
Also I love their line up, most notably Getaway3… seems like complete Dejavu.

The controller really looks messed up – more like a boomerang. I assume they have some reason for it being designed like so ( or maybe they though the origional xbox controller ruled! <_< >_> )

I just saw the renders of Getaway 3, Now I am convinced its all bullshit. Sorry but you can trust a company like Sony, after the crap they pulled with the Emotion Engine, they will surely do anything to push others out of the market. Microsoft and Nintendo will have my full support.

“For the year end sales season, simultaneously building up both the PlayStation Portable system in America and Europe as well as the next generation PlayStation is one option that we have.” Stated Sony Chief Financial Officer Takao Yuhara.[/quote:abadfba6f5]
Hmm the possibility of the PS3 being released later this year..

The graphics chipset, meanwhile, has been named the RSX – which stands for “Reality Synthesizer”, as opposed to the “Graphics Synthesizer” that powered the original PlayStation 2. Never let it be said that Sony let an opportunity for a pretentious name pass them by.[/quote:88c61b33ec]
Now hows that for “viral psychosympathetic marketing mumbo jumbo clap trap”! :lol:And yes the controller looks horrible, like a Microsoft Sidewinder pad on a crash diet really…

Don’t like the look of it, the controller looks really horrible. But maybe it will still be comfortable to use….
The specs are very impressive, but still, as someone mentioned this is Sony, and I won’t believe all their hype until I see running playable demos.
As for the “Reality Synthesizer”…..

Killing Day is probably the closest representation of what to expect from the PS3. The Killzone 2 stuff made my jaw hit the floor but its definitely pre-rendered, I doubt if the PS3 version will come close.

One thing I was disappointed with was the variety of games on offer. Everything they showed was either pretty violent, or some kind of (violent) car racing game. Presumably they plan to appeal to existing hardcore gamers initially, but I would have enjoyed a bit more variety then yet another nicely rendered explosion with lots of physics bits flying all over the place, or loads of ai agents getting butchered in interesting ways.

Most of the innovation for new consoles seems to be coming from the portables. Some of the games I’ve seen running for the PSP and DS are…wacky, to say the least. Although thats not to say wacky isnt fun! :D

possible pricing
Sony officials told the paper that the PS3 will go on sale in Japan with a launch price of “less than 50,000 yen” – approximately $465 or UKP 255 at current exchange rates.[/quote:65ea353cbb]

Ahh, I love it when execs start trash talking! :D The president and CEO of Sony didn’t hold back any punches when referring to Microsoft’s Xbox 360:
“We want to pack everything in today and future-proof this as much as possible,” said Kazuo Hirai, the head of Sony’s U.S. game unit, in an interview. “It’s a box made of future technology as opposed to Xbox 1.5, which seems to be a combination of things available today,” added Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. Ok so the confirmed facts are:
Killzone was rendered and not gameplay. Some of the other games were too. None of the other games have been confirmed/denied as yet. However the Unreal 3 demo, aswell as all the tech demos(ducks, London, gas station, etc.), and Fight Night were all rendered in real time by the PS3 and they all looked easily as good as any of the pre-renderred clips. Independent developers who have worked with the console have said that it’s easily capable of real time gameplay which matches and even beats the Killzone movie or any of the others. In fact, Epic have said that their Unreal demo wasn’t pushing the RSX hard and was barely using the Cell at all. Of course there was no physics or ai or any other gameplay related calculations going on, but the cell could easily handle all that. Epic have said they reckon the console is easily capable of games that look far better than *any* video that was shown at the press conference once developers get to grips with it. Also, that shouldn’t take too long because they’ve found the console easy to work with and the dev kit environments are very familiar to programmers experienced with developing PC games.
The only limitation here is how much developers are prepared to spend on creating the games. Very few games are likely to truly push the hardware to its limit. But those that actually do should be amazing. I’d expect MGS4 to be very, very interesting.[/quote:f00a0a0e44]
