Tag,
I know I’m probably stirring up all kinds of hell, asking this question, but I’m gonna buy me one of them-there new-fangled hand-held games machines, and shucks, but I could sure as fook use some advice.
So. Who gets my cash?
1.) Sony’s PSP looks like the Pimp My Ride of handhelds ( http://www.us.playstation.com/psp.aspx )
2.) Nintendo’s DS – Well I’m kinda a nintendo kid to start with, so I wouldn’t mind hangin with Mario and the lads for a few more years ( http://www.nintendo.com/systemsds )
3.) GamePark – A mate of mine got one of these on eBay and he loves it. Reckons he can write his own games for it, comes with all kinds of emulators, play MP3’s, DivX’s, JPEG etc. Anyone else got one out there??? ( http://www.gamepark.com/eng/hardware/hardware.asp )
4.) Gizmondo – Read a couple of good things about this one in Edge, but don’t know ANYONE who actually has one. Could be an Atari Lynx all over again… ( http://www.gizmondo.com/ )
5.) Zodiac – Tapwave seem to be touting their 3D Capabilities, but again, don’t know ANYONE out there who has one? ( http://www.tapwave.com/ )
So. Who reckons what?

The DS has more kooky software whereas the PSP will have the usual staple of PS2 type games, depends on what you’re looking for in a handheld to be honest.
The homebrew scene on the PSP looks alot stronger than the DS and that is going to be one of its main “unofficial” selling points for me.When they come down in price I’d probably go with the PSP. ..

Here’s your reply in respect of the Gizmo’… and that didn’t take long, considering EDGE was only just reporting on the EU (UK London) launch party one or two issues back…
LONDON, 6th July 2005 – Gizmondo Europe Ltd, subsidiary of Jacksonville, Florida-based Tiger Telematics Inc. (other OTC, TGTL), announces plans to open an office in Los Angeles, California by August 2005 prior to the launch of the Gizmondo in the USA, whilst streamlining its European operations to reflect a shift in emphasis towards the large North American markets and to prepare for future strategic initiatives by the company.
As part of the company-wide operational restructure and right sizing, Gizmondo Studios will be consolidated to maximize the efficiency and costs of game development. The overheads will also be reduced by half to reflect the co-publishing and development commitments from major game publishers, which has significantly lessened the need for internally biased game development programs. Some employees will be relocating as part of the move bringing teams in house, principally in the LA facility, which will host a new game development suite.[/quote:f1028e3760]

The Giz is an utter pile of poo. If you only want a few wacky games go DS. If you want lots of games go PSP.

the Gp32 looks cool and has a huge hombrew scene, and a very active community. http://www.gp32x.com/
but with the psp and ds on the scene now, i think its time has passed.
the psp scene has been going mad, but the fear is that sony will have forced firmware updates with it new psp games at some stage there for killing the HB scene

I own a PSP and just find it to be the coolest device. Needs more games (but this will happen – publisher support for the platform is very strong), you need to get a big MemoryStick (1Gb will cost about $130) but if you do then burn videos and MP3s etc. It’s a really great cool way to show video demos of your products at tradeshows – just whip out the PSP and play the video! … and the screen just kills everything else.
I also love the DS, but PSP wins for flexibility – all others are also rans commercially so doubt you’ll see strong title line-ups.

Looks like I’m buying a PSP!
The 1GB memory stick sold it for me. I can just imagine myself walking into [yet another] job interview, and when asked for samples of work, just whip out my PSP let them help themselves!
Cheers Steve.

theres also 2gb and 4gb memstick out, but quite expensive 2gb is around 400 dollars.
I agree with steve definately great for video\audio demoing. Excellent for homebrew development also.

this upgrade thing has started already with space invaders (jap) and coded arms (jap). hackers now have release booter programs which call the boot.bin file on the umd disc without calling the update dialog.
although if they start using new features which are only available in the later firmware, then the gamer will have to upgrade. although force upgrades are dangerous, you cant just upgrade the system without prompting the user, because if they are not hooked to a mains and it proceeds to flash the system and the battery dies, the firmware might be completely corrupted. rendering your psp an expensive paper weight, and only useable again after a pricy trip to a sony repair centre.

yeah i havent done much in the last week or two, things have been hectic. Although i was working on a demo title alright. Had basic game structure up and running in about 2 hours. Even had the buttons\analog stick hooked in. Its pretty easy coding, more so than ps2 development. the toolchain for that with gcc is a bloody nightmare to get running (especially with cygwin.)

Unconfirmed, but SCE may be looking to “solve” the homebrew issue which is being hit hard with the new firmware updates – by putting together an authorized homebrew development system, like NetYaroze for Ps1 and Ps2Linux for Ps2. Unconfirmed, but SCE do like the homebrew scene.
