      Hi

I am going into the final year of my course BBS(IS) in CIT.
I have always loved games and always wanted to work in the area. I would love to go into producing or design but dont know what i need to do next. can anyone suggest any courses or any other advice.

      Thanks

well preview our courses section and look at the previous threads on this topic…people have already provided quite a bit of advise on these forums to people in your situation…

it kind of depends what you want to specialise in too…

I have taken a look at the courses, i would probably take a shot at the Degree course offered in carlow.
Though i am hoping to go into the more management or design side rather than the hard coding.

      Thanks for the advice

To my knowledge the course in Ballyfermot is more design orientated….but it is not (to me knowledge) a degree…

anyone know any courses with good business inputs?

      Aphra.

NWIFHE also have a HNC level version of their course

Producing or designing, what one would you like to do most?

I’d really like to design but to be honest i would have to get an artist to draw anything for me, i’m hopeless.

I like the organisation side of producing,i think i would be good at it but at the moment i dont have much to go on

its all up in the air and i would go either way though if i had the skill, design would be my first choice

you might want to bear in mind that design is not an entry level position. You will not get a design job off the bat, but will need to start as a level designer/artist/programmer/QA first…. same goes for producer/associate producer, but some studios have assistant producers (basically production interns) where you could learn the ropes

Get your hands on a copy of Break into the Games Industry by Ernest Adams

You can read a whole chapter from the book at:

      http://www.designersnotebook.com/Books/Break_Into_The_Game_Industry/break_into_the_game_industry.htm

It should give you a good preview before buying it. Well worth it. :)

that book got here and i have gone through it. it really does detail the industry pretty well. It clarified quite a few things.

I think i would be suited more to the project management/producer roles. i havent the talent for artwork or the patience or concentration for coding.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to get into this area? I know its not entry level but would you reccomend any entry level position that would be suited to advancing in that direction?

QA (testing) is the usual and arguably best way to start a career in production. Alternatively, in a larger studio, you might be lucky enough to get an internship as a Production Assistant/Assistant Producer, and from there move on to Associate Producer > Producer , etc.
