Buy your girlfriend a laptop?!
Good Lord if you have that much money to throw out the windows, I have a Paypal account you can send it to.
Otherwise, I think you should keep the money. But that’s just the squirrel in me talking  -

Take yourself off to Amsterdam for a long weekend and spend the money on drugs and brassers. Best not to tell the girlfriend.

A wee update, R520 benchmarks are out thanks to ATi pissing tech sites off enough with their NDA and lack of updates in general. The guys over at Hardware Analysis have compared the two graphics solutions side by side and as you can see the 7800GTX is still king of the hill. The ATi card did win one or two tests but that was when the x1800 XT card was compared with a stock GTX and since most people buy the factory overclocked cards anyway even those minor victories are really ruled out.
So to reiterate, I’d stick with Nvidia for this generation…

Aceley,
you should check out PC World (and equivalent) at the moment, cause you could pick up a ‘Office’ Laptop for your lady for about 600 Euro, and get yourself a damn chunky laptop for about 1200.
My mate just picked up a Compaq something-or-other from PC-World. Gig of Ram, 64-bit AMD Processor (in a laptop), 17″ screen, and countless ports, connectivity and blah blah blah.
128MB Ati graf kart too.
Plays BF2 with a HELL-UVA-LOT of the options turned Up. Just FYI.

And i hope i dont cause offense jediboy, but i wouldnt buy anything from PC world unless its in the bargins bins they have now… ive found them to be very expensive… :( was looking at this site
seem pretty good… wouldnt mind a Toshiba laptop for myself either, ive seen and heard nothing but goodness from people that already own one…
Anyway…
Im gona hold out a little bit longer, if i find myself coping without a laptop then i might not bother getting myself one

Eh….There is no mobile AMD Dual Cores out? If you mean 64bit then yea, the new Turion’s are the one but there hasnt been much mention of the mobile DCs yet. As for powerhouse laptops your pretty much confined to Alienware or the Dell XPS although Rock and Voodoo also do comparable models but they’re US and UK companies so shipping etc… will be expensive. Oh and FYI, nVidia have just started talking about the G70 mobile chips so IF you decide to go with a lappy then wait for those and they should be standard on mosta the higher end models soon.

Too late, bought an Alienware beast last week, I was just curious because I thought you had seen some AMD 64 x2 laptops. As far as I know the only ones available are from http://www.rockdirect.co.uk and they’re well pricey

Mesh Computers is where i seen a Dual Core 4200 chip in it
And ive never had experience with Dual Core chips overheating at all… maybe Notebooks are different…
And yea, the 4200 i noticed on that site is rather pricey, but well worth it id say if i could find the same Notebook only with a 7800 GTX instead of the X800 Graphics Card… wouldnt you all agree ?

I needed a new PC anyway, mainly for High end Max work and a bit of gaming too. Portability was important too as I’m often between Donegal and Dublin. AW is the only option for a decent spec desktop replacement unless you want to shop internationally. Had a look at the Mesh computer site, the laptops look like rebadged Clevos, similar to AW, Sager and Pro-Star

I dont know which to buy still, im thinking of a laptop at the momment as im going into alot of full time educations things and a few night courses etc…
I would like a note book with a 64bit AMD minium, i would not go Intel as I have heard they have terrible over heating problems… I would like an AMD FX chip or Dual Core Chip for the shear power of it and to be future proof… but i dont want to spend the money…
Ive seen and used a few toshiba notebooks and i was rather impressed, although i like the shape of the new Sony VAIO i cant remember what series, but there was no blank space around the keyboard on these particular models, but once again Sony have mainly if not all Intel Processors…Anyone that knows of some decent laptop sellers like Mesh i mentioned above please post links here, would be much appriciated…
Thanks

Yea the Komplett built PCs are really good actually, I like the way they combine the customise-ability of Dells with the better known parts that you know both the price and performance of from Komplett…Plus you can have my sexy Wavemaster case! :D
-
20/09/2005 at 5:02 pm #25185AnonymousInactive
I wanted the wavemaster case but they were sold out when I got my PC….
-
20/09/2005 at 5:09 pm #25187AnonymousInactive
yeah, Komplett are definitely awesome.
I only bought my Shuttle case in Switzerland cos it was so much cheaper there, but still, the guys at Komplett must have the lowest prices I know of in Europe. Although I wish my German wasn’t so rusty, cos I reckon they have interesting prices, too (all those MEDION products).Philippe

I posted earlier about my mate who bought a Compaq AMD 64-bit laptop, and how great it was at a price of 1200.00 Euro, well *apparently* its on the ‘fritz’ as the screen keeps turning off.
tsk tsk PC World….
Just FYI

LMAO,
I wasn’t gonna mention it, as I hoped this was some sort of fluke.
But my friend bought a similar computer from PC World Derry at the beginning of the summer… a laptop with I can’t remember what, but some pretty good config (well, specs, anyway). First surprise came when he checked out the graphics card : “Oh sorry, didn’t we mention the gfx card RAM is shared? Ah you probably didn’t read the ad carefully, eh?”.
Then IIRC, he couldn’t remove XP. Like, couldn’t. So well, in fact, that when my friend tried to simply format and put his install of 2k, well, he couldn’t. So it went back to the factory. For a month. Then it came back and the hard drive crashed. Another month.
At that point I came back from holidays with my brand new SN25P. Still, it kind of works now…
ah let’s face it, if you are serious about your computing, don’t be an idiot and buy your computer in parts, or at the very least not in a rip off shop like PC World.Philippe

Yea the Wavemaster case is alwyas sold out on Komplett, the only ones they have are usually the yellow and blue versions. :?
Jes, the German company are also really good and you sometimes find better prices there than on Komplett. The only drawback is that they don’t take credit cards, you have to do a bank transfer…that and the translation and product info is abit sketchy. A few of my mates have ordered stuff from them and it arrived quickly and in perfect nick so no complaints from there either really.

Well, I know that the shop I bought all my stuff in Switzerland were ordering from Germany. So I’m pretty sure it would be interesting.
You hear that jediboy? Your German experience might come in handy after all!
