There was a posting recently about the IGDA accrediting game development courses in Ireland.
Does the IGDA Ireland recommend, as part of working with game development courses, technologies that are suitable for use on these college courses ( eg Torque, Reality, Torc, CanDo Toolkit ), depending on the type of course?
If this isn’t currently the case, this might be a useful, practical and beneficial thing to do ( as many of the lecturers assigned to new game development courses may not be aware of the pros and cons of various different technologies ).
If this is the case, we have a game related educational product ( http://www.candointeractive.com/gamedesign/car ) that is currently being used by a number of Irish courses, and we would be very interested in receiving some sort of IGDA acknowledgement of the fact that our product is relevant to certain games courses ( this will help us target more courses in Ireland with our product ). How would I go about this?

Would there be an unacceptable level of (perceived) bias from an accreditation committee which is at the same time trying to sell products to the courses they are accrediting?

I’m quite hopeful that this isn’t the case… if it was allowed to happen, it would vastly undermine the credibility of the committee.

This is true, regarding recommending software over other software etc.
However, if a university or college is thinking of starting a games related course, and comes to the IGDA board asking for advice on what they could use, it might be useful to have a list of available options that they could then check out themselves ( supplying them with information to help them take their decisions in a more informed manner ).

we might look at including something like this in the Education brochure rather than a spart of the accreditation scheme… might be more suitable there

Great! I wasn’t aware that there was an Education brochure, is it possible to get a copy to see what it currently looks like?

Mm, well like a lot of things it doesn’t look like much yet as it is a bunch of word files and a couple of sponsorship letters which have been sent out.
We have some bodies interested in funding this and the idea was to have a special section on, or link from gd.ie which provided info on courses, profiles of Irish people working in the industry and info on the Irish industry. We would supplement this with a flier to be sent to career guidance teachers in secondary schools north and south of the border.
A lot of work got done on this by Jamie almost a year ago and I have been tardy in taking it to the next stage. Then again, we were also redesigning gd.ie at the time too…
so you haven’t missed it and when I get my act together I will be looking for others to help..
