Hi all,
apologies if this has been posted here or if it’s old news:
Maplins on Capel Street has a playable demo of ‘King Kong’ on Xbox 360. Seems pretty good. Some lovely textures (seemed to be normal mapped), and some great character animation.
The particle effects loooked a little average, as did the collision detection. Other than that, looks like an interesting title, and a cool first glimpse of the 360 (for me at least).

Was funny, I was playin it in Xtra-Game in the square, couldn’t get anywhere as the T-Rex just stayed biting the bridge, didn’t seem like a whole lot to do. So I finished up and went about my business. Stopped into Smiths on my rounds, and decided to have another try. Turns out that the one in Xtra-Game had hit a glitch and the T-rex was supposed to break up the bridge and chase you.
Only got to play it for a bit more, couldn’t seem to find a run button and/or didn’t have time to get used to fps on console. Seems cool though. Gfx were really nice though not sure what I was expecting of next gen, but I guess I’ll have to really play a few games to get the feel of it. At the mo, it all just feels like the n64 did the with 4mb expansion.

Down in Galway for a few days and upon popping into the local Xtra Vision I noticed an XBox 360 stand standing beside that PS2 GAA “yoke”. Call Of Duty 2 was the game of choice and while I didnt play it for long and so didnt get much into the game the one thing I took from the experience was that the conroller is fantastic. Its nice and solid, big enough to fit my hand but small enough that all the controls are perfectly positioned. Basically I havnt been so happy with a controller since I first got my MS Sidewinder pad, roll on the machines proper launch I say!

Hrm, never really liked the N64 controller…it was good but I didnt like the trident design, I prefer when you can go from the analog to the d-pad instantly. Plus I never found them very well made which annoyed me no end also.

I’m with kyotokid on this one. Best controller by a long shot. Dreamcast & gamecube are 2nd with nothing to call between them. I’ve never known any controller to survive hard cosistent use for any amount of time. The sole exception is my original N64 grey controller, which still works perfectly.
I think the trident design was brilliant because it forced designers to consider how to use the pad, although certain standards did emerge. And the module slot at the back was genius.

I wouldn’t rate the Gamecube controller as anywhere near the best, or the Dreamcast!
The Dreamcast controller was so bloody uncomfortable, and the Gamecube controller was awkward. It was comfortable to hold yes, but the buttons were crap and their placement even worse.I would say the Dualshock and N64 are by far the best controllers so far.

[/quote:b1269247ac]Comfortable to hold, ok at least you recognise the ergonomics, one argument we won’t have to have, but button placement? The gamecube controller was designed to be intuitive. There’s a big green button, designers please make the principal action of the game revolve around the big green button. The cancel button should be the small red button, easily found when you want it, but slightly more difficult to hit to avoid accidental usage. Its also good for actions that you might think twice about using i.e weapons with limited ammo, brakes in a racing sim. The X & Y buttons are at 12 and 3 to the main button, easily found with out looking so you can play for longer without having to look at the pad. The shoulder buttons have varying levels of response so that they can be pressed accidentally a little (ever noticed how inexperienced gamers often squeeze joypads?) and then there’s a 3rd shoulder button for whatever you like. and the d-pad and j-stick are within easy reach of eachother. and the c-stick is in easy reach of the main button cluster
Yes the d-pad is too small, no it doesn’t have as many buttons as the competition, but all the control methods are independent of eachother, using the j-stick is not simply alternative to the d-pad (although it can be if you want it to be) and using the c-stick is not an alternative to using the buttons.
Simply put the gamecube pad was designed for pick up and play. The proof, to my mind, is in wario ware. The only game I’ve ever known where you can hand the controller to someone who has never played games before, be asked “how do you play this?” and reply “you’ll see”. And they will pick it up. SOmething happened! What will I do? I’ll hit the big green button! oh I was too slow, but my character reacted I’ll try that again.
Nifty
P.S. If you have issues with the dreamcast I hope to god you’re not going to try and claim there’s merit in the X-Box controller

Best controller ever is the N64 official controller.
Most uncomfortable controller ever is either the master system or NES controller (talk about a brick in the hand)
Most uncomfortable controller after ergonomics where taken into account is the dual shock.

Have to agree the gamecube controller is amazing, easiest way to shoot down dualshock try res4 on ps2 and gc and see how much better the cube controller is ;)

GoldenEye on N64 with the official controller. I have never experienced such a perfect blend of precision and control.

Ok Gamecube is grand, for Nintendo games and games built specifically for it. Shite for most 3rd party games.
The Xbox s-pad is far superior to the Dreamcast controller. The old Xbox pad is utter crap though. -

[/quote:eb9c50faa6]Ok back that up. I don’t know how you will. Its a controller, its good enough for nintendo’s inside projects so how can it be usually crap for everything else? (I’m not going to be an ass about your staement, I do assume you were generalising)
The only controller comparison I’ve ever read, regarding a 3rd party game, was for soul calibur II on ps2, xbox, and gamecube. It was in edge and he decided that the gamecube version was the best version, despite how little he thought of link as a character (Link from the Zelda series was the gamecube signature character). And the reason he decided gamecube, was because he believed the gamecube was the best suited controller to the game.

Nuff said[/quote:eb9c50faa6]Yup definitely. As for the xbox controllers, either of them, I always thought the weighting was weird, I can’t sit down to game of Halo for very long at all.
