Red Vs Blue is, imho, one of the best machinimas. The guys over at Rooster Teeth did a fantastic job on it. Havn’t watched their new ones yet but I’ve heard very good things about The Strangerhood…

messed about with some of this before btu I don’t really see the point in it unless there is some interaction with the environment and some control for the viewer how he looks at the scene etc. I mean why not just watch an avi really?
If you could include little secrets in the scenes that if you watched it from one perspective you saw one thing and from another somethiung different.
For example someone walking down the street at night… if you follow the peopel you hear their conversation etc… then a gang jumps out and they get mugged. You feel they are the victim automatically. If you zoom out spot the muggers and zoom in on them you get their side of the story but realise that the peole walking down the street are I dunno Nazis or the muggers were mugged byu them days before or something…. you feel the muggers are in the right.Obviously I haven’t spent much time thinking on this but you get my drift. I think this is where machinama could come into its own and make a difference…. otherwise I’ll stick to my avis thank you very much.

Yeah, I was into machinima for a while, a guy involved in machinima even gave a talk at TCD.
Anyway, there are generally two ways to do it, either you script the entire sequence and record from scripted cameras, or you set things up in multiplayer and have all the characters and camera controlled by other players in real time, like actors.
You can mix and match them naturally.Given the potential for modding that a lot of games have, the possibilites of machinima are gigantic. They range from something (relatively)simple like making scenes in a game universe(Red vs. Blue), or the machinima eqivalent of a total conversion mod where you create an entirely new scenes with new animations, models, levels etc. based on whatever you want with only the mechanics of the game engine left (Hardly Working).
In the end, it depends on what effect and scene you want to create. Then look at various games and game engines and see which ones will give you the structure you need while also being flexible and customisable for what you want to do.

I liked the ‘A few good G-men’ machinima done with the HL2 engine.
Why hasn’t someone tried to remake the film ‘Star Wars’ with a game engine.
(You know…cause the kids like the Star Wars and that…)

Who are these “kids” you speak of?

Ya know…them….those people with all that free time to devote to insane projects. The ones who do it out of blind love for some silly film about some space wizards and aliens and space wars or some such thing.

Couldn’t be students, all that they blindly love is booze, lentils, missing lectures and clothes made out of wicker
