Sister companies. One makes middleware tools the other games. While darkwater is a split off company there is no crossover in staff. I attended an Instinct presentation recently and while they have the advantage of being being able to work closely with darkwater there is a clear division.
Plus hay two companies in the irish game industry is better than one right. :)

you know, i was thinking of applying to darkwater studios after i finish college as an artist. after seeing this, i dont think i will.
its an embarasment releasing images like this from a supposedly "commercial" studio. the planes look like they are made of plastic. hello?? do your research people! wood and canvas. and look at the landscape!!! argh!! anyone want to bet that i could make assets better than these in a week. on my own. and some clown is getting payed to do this? i will kill him and take over.do i appear angry? i guess i am. its deppressing, but there seems no way out of having to leave the country of my birth once i finish college if i hope to work in anything except third rate trash and mobile games. to tell you the truth, i dont want to leave ireland. but things like this are a real embarasment. when england, a slightly larger island just over there >> can pump out triple A games every year (and a load of crap) without the help and assistance of major govenment funding. and this is the best we can show for ourselves?
and as re; instinct tech? they charge a fortune for a second rate engine that has been playing catch up since doom3, but never really managing it. how much funding has been pumped into that company? its not exactly an indie start up. what has it been doing? ARGH!!!now excuse me while i go and take my pills and think happy thoughts.

I had also been thinking of looking for a job there in the next few years. I keep an eye on the site quite often and will continue to do so to see how this turns out.

I think you are missing the point with England, look at their population in comparison to ours. Also look at the development companies, their foundation started when the games industry had far lower barriers to entry.
If Ireland had alot of development teams back in the 80’s working on all manner of games the market would have evolved differently from where it is now. Unfortunately we didn’t have that growth period (not saying it wasn’t there, it just didn’t sustain itself like in England, US, Australia) and now the barriers to entry are very high making it more and more difficult for development teams to start.
Although for some reason most developers think that AAA games are the point of entry, and they are expecting AAA dev houses to just pop up around the country. While it is the smaller indie dev teams making mobile games, XBLA, PSN games that stand the greatest chance of getting their foot in the door. It’s a market, a starting point and not something to be made light of.
(Just my opinion, not actually based on hard facts…)
I also would have thought you would go the freelance route, given your contracting experience?

best chance is porting games to get into the biz sumo digital are a perfect example of this entry point and now their making full blown AAA titles.

although for a company trying to showcase a set of tech, porting a game may not be the best option for them. Unless they are free to use their own engine in which case it should be fine.
Out of interest though is the porting market rather tied up? I would assume that publishers have a set of IP and trusted dev houses they would use for such things. A company with no track record how would they fair at getting such a port?
I’ve only ever looked into Existing IP and developing games from them, not taking existing games and porting them. From what I found large publishers typically snapped up all IP that was worthwhile, and dished them out to their trusted network of dev houses.
Perhaps it’s a different ball game for porting games, where any house can make a tender for the port. In which case it’s probably something darkwater or any dev house in Ireland should consider.

It wasent a different team, fair enough a few left but a few are still there. gallagher lads etc. Pete on here can clear this debate all up. But last time i heard (sept) they were the same place in reality.

No debate from me, I really don’t know enough about it to debate it.
I just feel peoples expectations for startup studios to go straight into AAA games is at times un-called for. There is nothing wrong with casual or social games, nor anything wrong with tech demos or other development projects. Once it pays the bills and it’s the direction the company wants to go why not.
To dismiss a development team because you don’t like the look of their screenshots is rather silly and all you are doing is limiting your options.

I believe I had an interesting email chain going with Mike 6 months ago, although I would like to confirm it was him before I post so I won’t go into details.
Let’s just say http://www.1944d-day.com had money to spend on an engine (Alot of money) and Instinct Engine was an option until we were declined. I have no idea why, especially when we had the money but we got turned away.
But I think we landed on our feet regardless ;)

Yikes – I’d like to hear some time why you were declined, as money tends to be king when making decisions like that.
I didn’t realise Mike G left Instict either – he was one of the most connected people in the UK games industry, so hopefully the Torc guys got a lot of contacts out of his time there.

They look better.
Its just a shame the terrain is empty. Can’t imagine its high on the making-gameplay good list, but its the simple things that make the difference. -

The terrain its self looks nice but there are just some flat parts that make it look empty. I think it looks very intresting and am looking foward to playing it.
Its a nice little title for a studio just starting up.

It has a very Crimson Skies vibe to it which can only be a good thing in my books. Plus it’s still in development and the kind of terrain detail people seem to be expecting will be added in good time I’m sure. :)

This i know, but screen shots are screen shots. You should NEVER EVER produce crap ones. You try your hardest never to give marketing a bad screen shot, because if you do, you know thats going to be the one that makes it into the magazines. Screen shots should always show off whats best. Never show one that has something you’re not happy with. If someone can find something wrong with one, so will other people. -

When we took screen shots of Rally, the amount of mulling over each one got before it was released to the press was enormous.

I hope it’s the opposite of blazing angels, that game sucked! Something that didn’t feel just like ace combat with a different skin would be nice. Something that actually felt like you were chugging along in an old bi-plane
