I havent broken into the industry yet so I cant speak on that bit. I can on the assistance Uni’s give however.

I went to the University of Ulster at Jordanstown. When I expressed serious interest in entering Dare to be Digital, they gave a huge amount of help. I had to travel many a time to their Magee campus in Londonderry.

Uni of Ulster fronted money for petrol, hotel rooms a couple of times, once when there was a games training seminar in our chosen program and another time the night before our interview for Dare.

They visited us regularly at Dare as mentors, offering support. Then toward the last week paid for an indian dinner for both teams.

Having broken the industry and been in it for a number of years as a programmer. I think you need to do a course in Computer Science with a good focus on programming and mathematics. All CS courses in Ireland have their pros/cons, ppl’s choice I find is heavily dependent on their budget, desired distance to travel to/from the college, their particular focus (whether its more multimedia, maths, etc). I think you’ll find most of the pro game programmers on this site all went to various different uni’s theres no one super course or magic course which will get you a job in games, regardless of the future posts that will no doubt follow, like the last time we had this debate ;) .

Basically, you need a good grounding in CS, the ability to work hard and really really love breaking down complex problems and analysing what makes a game play and look good.
