Wonder what the hardware/middleware/console guys think….come to think of it…..could they now be lobbying for less broadband!

Did anyone, with a US postcode, sign up for the BETA?

We’ve had this article going around a thread at work for the past few days. The general consenus is that its propaganda and wont scale on the web. At GDC its probably working as they are most likely using a gigabit ethernet switch and running locally.

When you factor in the unpredictability of the internet, its unlikely you can support 1ms ping times and send a video of 720p at 60fps over the internet. Even the slightest delay would render the game experience useless ( imagine lag on a game like burnout paradise ).

Also the buzz word of cloud computing is a bit bs as fair enough you might have the processor power but where you getting all the feckin video memory from. Are you essentially going to have 1 high spec pc for each client connected to your server.

Sorry i’m a bit skeptical, but if i’m wrong i’ll gladly eat my hat as i’d sign up without hesisition if it works. But I doubt I will be ;)

      Install GPUs on the servers?

I like the look of this and I do hope it proves reliable.

It’s possible that the lag won’t turn out to be as big a problem as everyone thinks, but I just don’t see how the scalability works. Aiming at having millions of users, but needing a dedicated GPU/console for each user just seems completely impractical.

I’d love to see it work though – this has the potential to put a bullet in the head of both piracy and the used game resale market.
