Hey guys, iv read through the course list on the site and have looked on their respective websites but im more looking to study abroad. One main reason is to mature a little and get out there on my own. As well i would like to study in an area that has a sizable amount of companies that relate to what im studying. For me living at home and have my a*s wiped for me is just getting annoying now so i want to jump ship and get cracking on with my career. My main area of interest is modeling and level design but iv noticed a vast majority of courses cake on the programing and systems technology. Im not sure if this is something i can avoid. It seems like a catch 22 as the courses that are within my skill level involve allot of programming and computer architecture while courses the solely focus on modeling are way beyond my current skills. Iv just finished LUDO in ballyfermot and chose not to go on and do the HND as i feel its just not cutting edge enough and feel ill still be a good bit behind on industry standards even after finishing the course.
So what im asking is if anyone could suggest some courses abroad…..anywhere abroad. Im just trying to compile a list of possible choices of where to study. like i said it would be great if they mainly focused on the design and modeling end of things. Iv searched the net and it just seems there is a wealth of options available but trying to narrow it down is melting my brain. So far im leaning towards Teesside and looking to do the foundation year of games design and animation and progress to do the further 3 years, this way i can do the one year without really commiting to something very long term if i dont really like it.

How far abroad is abroad? Like mainland UK? Or further?
If you’re talking mainland UK, look at where the companies are, I know Dundee and London have quite a few, so look at Unis there.

yeah i would like to study in an area with an abundant amount of companies. mainland UK would be fine, see one thing thats putting me off teesside is i heard the area isn’t very nice and although im not going to let the area dictate where i study it would be nice to have a good course in a decent area. Like i was saying do you know of any courses that focus on more the 3d modeling and design aspects of gaming or will i have to do some form of programming? i just cant seem to find a course just focused on game design on the art end of things.

Level design often requires the ability to script, and the script language used varies from company to company (sometimes even between tasks).
A well taught programming module will set you up with essential career skills. Not just the coding itself, but hopefully the ability to pick up other languages as needed.
Have you looked at Southbank university in London?

i never looked at this university but this course seems to cover the areas i want to study.

Very few universities are known for games specifically. South bank is known for media and arts of which they consider games a part (as opposed to engineering in other unis).
The university has cross course projects and also some sort of association with nearby developers.
Southbank was my no. 2 preference when I was choosing where to study in London. I opted for Brunel in the end, they are starting up a undergrad games course this year but I’m not sure if the content is what you’re looking for.

brunel has some courses but they all seem to relate to creative writing in some way and cant seem to find one that teaches 3d. thanks for the suggestions. LSBU seems very interesting.

Having a strong programming module is a major plus even if you’re not all that keen on it.
One of the teams at Dare last year was from South Bank and they were very good. I’m not sure if they were reflective of the usual standard produced by South Bank but if they were it is definatly worth further investigation.

I’ve just finished a degree in games design from staffordshire uni. It took me 4 years becasue I did the HND in Ballyfermot, it usually is only a 3year course. If its just level design and modeling you want ot do this is one of the best palces in the UK to do it. There is no programming and no sound modules. It just all about modeling.
The problem is you will only be doing about 12hours in the uni a week. all of the course work you do is on your own at home and most thing you need to do you will have to find a tutorial for on the net. this is fine for modeling but not other stuff. they dont pay alot of attention to rendering or telling you how to light a scence. Being honest I’ve come out of their without a clue of how to render stuff properly.
Sounds like I hated it doesnt it.
Its a very good course but you ned to put the time and effort in yourserlf.
There is another 1 in Wales but I dont remeber the name of it which is menat ot be the best and it doesnt touch programming at all. It does however do normal drawing. Thsi could be handy for concept art and drawing out your models first. -

a guy in my class suggested huddersfield, he said they have a game studio on campus and have some kind of partnership with local companies. Not to sure about the truth in it but he’s a guy who is pretty well up on his stuff.

It was Huddersfield I was thinking of. Its meant to be brilliant. I dodnt go cause after two years in BCFE I didnt want to have to do another 3 over there. Plus the fee’s are crazy. But if your gonna go to the UK thats the 1 I suggest you look into the most. You apply through the UCAS, its like the CAO and its online.

The course in Staffordshire and the one in Wales. They sound like art courses, no programming, no audio, heavy emphasis on 3d modeling.

think huddersfield will be my final choice, iv decided to spend a year saving for fee’s and such so i guess ill apply in january and see how i get on
