Hi Folks,
What do guys think about art competitions. If I bought a new xbox as a prize for modelling and animating 2 characters would elves do the work?—–
I started a new game today thats been on my mind for ages. iPhone/ipad is target though may do a flash version or revisit html5’s progress after.Gameplay is a proven entity as this is an homage and I’ve done my research on what tech to use. It’s a nice and simple 2d one screen game so going with cocos2d.
Been rough inking my character designs. Bellow are 2. There are 4 characters in total. They will all be modelled and animated in 3D but will be sprites on a board in the end.

An xbox and credits in the final game? Folks should really pay attention to an offer like that!

[Do’h, survey should read "Xbox + credit will ‘bring’ out creatives?"]
Great that there is interest. But don’t start yet as I want to get a feel for what people think about the idea of a competition first and then will need to supply a full design brief and let the social networks know the comp is running. Not quite there yet.
But since you ask overview is:
The design must be inline with the form and cartoon style of the character images which will be supplied. I will post similar images for other characters at a later date when comp is to start.Image above is of one the characters that will need to be modelled & animated in 3D using any tools and as many polygons as you like.
It needs to be 3D as game needs the same animations of the character facing 4 different directions. (But if anyone really feels they can do that well in 2D then have at it).
The animations themselves will be. .
Pairing up with a texture artist or animator is encouraged if you feel your not strong in an area and vouchers for Game/GameStop will be assigned to lead person for you to split as you agree amongst yourselves (As can’t split an xbox very well).
As there are 4 characters and (Comp entry will require only 2 be done) winner may be approached to be paid do the other 2 or I may run a second comp for the other two.
IMPORTANT: Competition is NOT a go yet. And above is not a final rule set.

Great to have you on board Andreas.
—Added image for first throwaway mock-up of the game board & interface. Just figuring out style and where I will place buttons. Thought people might like to see how it progresses (There will be many photoshop versions :) ).
Comp Note:
The image is the size it would appear on iphone so you can see just how clear the characters need to be to discern the basic details. If people would prefer to model all 4 characters (other images coming soon) and not do animations I think that could work too. And then could run second comp to animate them.

Poll stands at 2 votes each. Humm maybe not a great idea.
I priced what it would take to have the work done professionally. Got answers 4-25k (Big range there). Anyway I don’t even have 4k for this project given how hit and miss the app store can be.But I think a 250 euro xbox may have been unfair given the level of work involved and the standard I would expect. So sorry to say comp will not go ahead this time. Though if this game sells I will use all the money on art on on the next one.
I will have to see what I can do with blender myself, I have a few hours today to try sculpting.

Try taking some time out to prepare a video with placeholder assets with a ‘your assets could be here’ type message’, and have a submission framework and rules of entry ready. Most importantly have a deadline.
Then relaunch the competition once the universities are back in class. August is just a bad time to try and get this kind of thing off the ground.
